Masters Realestate Inc. Complaint - Refund Practices - Deposit for lease in Rental of Condo
WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA -- I am writing to complain about Mary Jean Masters and Masters Real Estate, Inc., 5776 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33417. Through Masters, I signed a lease to rent a condo in Century Village. As requested by Masters, I sent three checks along with the executed lease: a check for $480.00 made payable to Masters Realty, a check for $520.00 made payable to the landlord, and a check for $50.00 to cover the cost of an investigation report.
We were scheduled to come to Florida and take possession of the condo on January 1st, 2007. However, a phone call from Masters on December 14th telling me that the landlord was pulling out of the agreement and that they would look for another apartment for me that would be compatible in price and space, and on the ground floor, as both my wife and I are handicapped. When they were unable to find anything suitable for me at the same price, we made arrangements on our own to rent a different condo.
Despite repeated requests, I have not received any of my money back. In addition, while I have been told that the $520 I paid to the landlord and the $50 I paid for the investigation report will be returned to me, Masters has told me that they are going to retain the $480.00 I sent them and that I will have to go after the landlord if I want that money back. This is blatantly unfair, unethical, and illegal. I have had no dealings with the landlord. I have only dealt with Masters. Further, the $480.00 was paid to Masters, not the landlord. I need the $480.00 in connection with my rental of the replacement condo. I am not in a position where a delay in getting that money back is acceptable. As far as I am concerned, Masters is stealing my money.
