Subject: Complaint about timing belt

I took in my car to Toyota of Selma in Selma, CA to have the fuel injectors cleaned. Once they were working on the car, they recommended that I change the timing belt since I have never changed the timing belt on my Toyota 4Runner. The vehicle did have over 150,000 miles and I have never changed the timing belt since I have owned the car. They also recommended changing the water pump, thermostat, drive belts, and then they damaged the radiator and wanted me to pay for it but refused since they recognized that MAYBE their technician might of bumped the radiator and caused it to leak.
I received my car back three days later. It cost me close to $920.00 to have all that work done but the price was brought down to $821.oo because I had coupons. I signed my paperwork and they told me that they GUARANTEE all work. Well, 100 miles later the timing belt area literally explodes and my car dies out on me. Toyota of Selma tows my car in on a Saturday and they are ALL surprised of what had happened. No one is telling me anything. The only thing they told me is that the General Manager has been informed about this issue. They told me if it was their fault I would not need to pay for the tow.
On Monday, I get a call from Kyle B. (General Manager) and states that the reason for the timing area to go bad was because it was my fault due to the reason that I have never changed the timing belt. I told him that the car was running before I brought here and now that they put hands into the timing area everything went bad. Oh, and by the way, I said, I have warranty. Kyle B. states that I had no warranty because the tensioner went bad and they didn't replace it; I was liable again for another $723.00 plus the tow. WHAT??? I just paid all kinds of money for you to work on the timing belt area and now you tell me that it is my fault??
Well, I didn't stay quiet. I called the Better Business Bureau in Fresno and also called the Bureau of Automotive Repair. The Better Business Bureau was no help at all. The BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) was a lot of help. Their number is 559.445.5015 and you can even ask for Ed Nichols at extension 207. Kyle B. did give me the number for Ed Nichols that I am very thankful to. To make a long story short, the BAR decided on behalf of my favor, that either they broke the part in the timing belt area or that the part was already bad before the vehicle arrived and they didn’t catch it. The BAR's decision was to fix it at no cost. Toyota of Selma declined to follow the recommendation of the BAR. So now I must proceed. My number is 559.433.5894. Please do not go to Toyota of Selma. Go to Benny’s of Toyota in Sanger or Michael's Toyota in Fresno. DO NOT GO TO TOYOTA OF SELMA.

I gotta agree with the BAR decision myself. Although the dealer may not have had malice in mind they should have recommended that the tensioner be replaced with the belt as prevenative maintenance. That way if the tensioner did seize (like they usually do with high mileage vehicles) then there would be no arguement as to who the liability should go to.

That is the thing. The dealer did not recommend the tensioner. As a consumer I did not know a tensioner even exist. Now I know a lot about the timing area.

Tensioner should always be replaced with belt. Dealer fault.
