Carrier Dealer Bayside Mechanical Informative - Outrageous charges - Furnace repair

Review by splicer01 on 2007-01-06
SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA -- Totally ripped-off. My Infinity furnace was under warranty. The thermostat went blank and did not function. I asked for a replacement and was told if I installed it, the warranty would be voided. The technician must come and put it in for $90 an hour. The technician came and told me I would be charged for TWO hours- one hour to install it and one hour to return the defective part to the factory. The technician popped my thermostat in in two minutes and demanded $180. I paid but felt totally cheated. Charged two hours for two minutes work for a system that was under warranty? That is unethical and Carrier should be ashamed of this practice

If it was under warranty why did you have to pay anything?

You definitely got ripped off. They told you it would void the warranty if you replace the thermostat? That sounds like BS! Buying the thermostat yourself would have probably been cheaper. Typically a programmable thermostat from Lowe's or Home Depot is only about $40. They are pretty much universal. Furthermore, the thermostat should have no bearing on the warranty for furnace itself.

The warranty for the thermostat may cover only parts, not labor.

On behalf of Bayside Mechanical, Inc I would like to establish details and facts that were conveniently forgotten.

1. You were informed of our rates and charges. And you AGREED to them. It was no suprise to you when you recieved the bill.
2. You forgot to mention that we are not the original contractor whom installed your Infinity furnace and thermostat.
3. The warranty ONLY covers parts, NOT labor.
4. You were not charged for the thermostat, but for our labor.
5. We suggested that you seek the original contractor to avoid labor charges, but you INSISTED to utilize our services.

Our company is a fair company that prides itself in providing excellent customer service. Not once did I read that our technician or staff was rude to you. We guided you through out the entire process - and proof be told, your thermostat is working fine. What I don't comprehend is how one can write such libel - when all the above could have been prevented if you would have called the original contractor.
