Circuit City Complaint - Extended Warrenty And $400 down the drain
NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- For those who are thinking about buying Circuit City Advantage Protection Plan for their computer, take my advice, go somewhere else. I advocate extended warranties for computers – I had GREAT experiences elsewhere – but this one is a waste.
The overview: This service is FILLED with incompetent workers. Their company policy is – I swear – force the customer to buy more products to postpone dealing with the issue at hand. Also, they tried hard to blame everything on software issues – convenient they don’t cover software problems. I had to figure out the hardware problem myself. After fighting with this service, the repair guy had to come in 6 times for 1 problem. This with the fighting, buying Window CDS, and 6 visits from the repair man rendered my computer useless for FIVE months. They use refurbished parts; my computer ran noticeably slower after these repairs. Read on if you like more details.
For a start in college - Computer Engineering - I bought a Compaq from Circuit City. Upon opening it, I realized it was a lemon; the CD drive would not read ANY CD. The call center for the protection plan advised me that CD-RW drives ONLY WRITE and I need to BUY a DVD drive to READ DATA CDS. After 4 hours of arguing, I get a replacement computer.
3 years later (and still under the protection plan) my PCI slot fails - leaving me with 5 months of hell. At the time, I knew something was wrong with my network, so I reformatted Windows incase of software problems. Windows fails during installation rendering my computer useless. The plans solution: buy a new Windows OS CD. When that failed, BUY ANOTHER WINDOW OS CD. Remind you, I had to pay $15 for each CD and shipping time took more than a week. All in all, I wasted $30 and more than 2 weeks of my time to figure that windows would not load (all while kicking and screaming).
I tell them that the problem is due to the network device. (I had a myriad of reasons) Do they listen? No. The service guy schedules a guy to replace the hard drive. That doesn't work. It's because they are refurbished. They schedule ANOTHER time to try replacing the hard drive. Somehow, he forced Windows on. Was it over? No. The computer will not recognize any internet connection. 1+ month to get windows with no internet services.
Again, back to calling the center. They tell me it's a software problem; they cannot help me unless I PAY. It's either a virus or I can't assemble a network properly. On a freshly installed windows (with no network connection), viruses are very rare. As for setting up my network - I had enough experience to know this was not the case.
I spend 2 weeks WITHOUT THEM to pinpoint the problem - broken PCI slot. Call the support:
Me: My PCI Slot is broken. Since it is connected to my mother board, I DEMAND a new mother board.
Customer Service: What's a PCI slot?
Yay! More incompetent workers! Actually, this one was fine. He actually listened and ASKED questions. Issued a guy to come out and replace my mother board. WOULD THIS SOLVE MY PROBLEMS? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. THE SERVICE GUY HAD TO COME OUT 4 MORE TIMES TO REPLACE THE MOTHER BOARD. WHY?
1.) They sent the wrong mother board
2.) The “new” mother board didn’t work to begin with
3.) The wrong mother board was in the right box
My computer never ran right after that. Since I had 2 laptops, I gave the computer to my brother.
