BestBuy/GeekSquad Informative - Buying a PC or laptop From BB
I just read in another forum that when you buy a PC or laptop from Best Buy they may insist that Geek Squad will check it first to be sure it's working. The pitch on that is "(fill in manufacturers name) puts out a lot of defective machines. We want to check it out for you and set it up". They will let you watch only if you insist. Apparently they are doing a set up but also they are installing trial software in the hopes you will buy it. Their excuse for that is "we are checking for virus or trojan infections."
A few people reported finding a virus or a trojan once they got the PC home. A new PC or laptop should be 100% clean. So guess how that infection got there. Another tactic reportedly in use is a claim that if they don't do they setup it will void the warranty. I'd say if you let them play with it the warranty will be void.
Sometimes they will bring the box right to Geek Squad where they open it up without telling you. If you see that demand a new unopened box and go right to the cashier.
You do have a right to open the box and check to be sure all parts are there. I don't know how many times I have inspected a 'sealed' box only to find stuff missing.
If you try to refuse their so-called service they may give you lots of grief. Should they continue to insist, demand a refund and walk out.
If a manufacturer puts out a lot of defective machines why are they selling them in the first place?
