Microsoft Corporation Informative - Windows XP Pro Upgrade with SP2
I recently purchased Windows XP Pro with SP2 thru Employee Purchase Program where I work. When I purchased it, I missed the part where it was an upgrade, but I can't see why that should be a problem.
I have a Compaq computer which came with XP Pro, but no disk, just a recovery partition. The recovery partion has a lot of "junk" trial offers to various products. It is old enough to need many updates and patches.
I purchased the disk to simplify the process reinstalling everything and starting over. This certainly hasn't happened.
I erased, partitioned, and formated one of my drives. I put something on the small partition, loaded XP Pro on the large partition, and proceeded to load software. I then decided this drive wasn't going to be large enough. I bought a new 160 Gig drive, partitioned, formated, loaded small partition, loaded XP Pro on C partition, proceeded to load software.
About this time I noticed my screen wasn't the size I wanted it, and I couldn't seem to set it.
I went to help and support for help. I found that help isn't working correctly.
When index is clicked, the index is blank except for a small rectangle with a red X. If a word is entered in search, things seem ok, but when a link such as Related Topics is clicked, all that happens is a small icon is put on the screen each time.
I have loaded and reloaded XP atleast a dozen times, trying various things such as, using Windows 95 CD as proof to be allowed to upgrade, Win 98, installing over Win98, installing over XP Home, letting the XP CD format the drive, formatting it before starting.
I started this process 25 DEC 2006, and have spent most of my free time trying to find answers. I have been in contact with Microsoft Tech Support for two weeks now, and so far they have no answers. Microsoft sent me a second disk, and it had the same problem.
For the record, the XP Pro that came with the Compaq works, the XP Home worked. This XP Pro doesn't work, when only 1 drive is connected from the start, the XP CD formats the drive, and nothing else is installed on the drive.
I am not a big AOL fan, but it is what I have and isn't the cause of the problem, since the problem is there before AOL is loaded. Otherwise the XP seems to work, as I am using it to send this.
I have had some other issues, which I feel may be caused by this XP, but have found solutions. My screen problem was a driver missing, and some problems with Quicken which I managed to solve.
Now Microsoft wants to replace the disk again, it sounds like. It seems they might be willing to send me XP Home, but not refund the difference in price.
Has anyone else had a problem with this version of XP Pro? Any other suggestions? I use help fairly often. I know some people probably wouldn't care if help didn't work, but if I bought a new car, even if i never drove at night, I would expect the headlights to work.
