Symphony One Complaint - Mold causing health conditions

Review by thxmaster on 2007-02-05
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA -- Dear anyone

My name is Ryan. I am 24 years old. Recently I have been having a very difficult situation regarding my apartment complex. For 4 months I have been having upper resperitory infections. I have insurance through my restaraunt which does not cover much and i have spent within four months over $1200 dollars in health bills regarding upper resperitory problems, emergency visits due to migraines, constant fatigue, and abnormal skin rashes. I know what your thinking- could it be something other than mold?
Mold was my last resort. Thinking I had every disease in the book, including HIV, which i tested NEGATIVE 3 consecutive times over a period of 4 months, I realized that the ceiling cracking in the corner of the airconditioning could be a clue to what is going on. My friends had come to my place to visit and all left with sore throats. So i opened up my air conditioning and underneith where the air is sucked into the filter- there was a thick grey furry coating all underneith the filter. Above where the air conditioning ceiling is - is all cracked- moiture stains are all along the inside of the walls.

So I talked to my the GABLES office, and they sent someone over to check it out- they fixed the problem by painting over the stains. I told them that the leak might be coming from the third floor apartment. So they check it out and there was a "very bad leak" as described by the maintainence worker. I wanted out of the lease because i was feeling so bad and they wouldn't let me out of the lease. They said that i have to get proof that the apartment is causing the problem. I told them that they are the ones who need to send someone in to investigate mold.

The manager at the apartment suggested a person that she knew of- that would check for the mold. I told her not to enter my apartment without me there becauase i wanted to show the man exactly where to look for the mold- They went in without me present- and 3 weeks later i still have yet to get documentation on if anyone really went in there or not.

So i went to the ear nose and throat doctor who said that i have a sinus infection after taking a 250 dollar cat scan. i am running out of money- i want to fight this, i only want to be healthy- after taking amox-clav- medicine that they perscribed- ($189) i felt better and now my after 3 weeks my symptoms are returning. I am depressed, i am sad that i have to live with my WINDOWS OPEN and AIRCONDITIONING off -What ever makes me feel worse- worsens when the air is turned. I stay sick and pay $985 dollars every month to live in unhealthy conditions. I can't take it anymore. I have gone to the health department. They can't help situations regarding mold. But i know that since that leak- my health has started deteriorating. I have headaches/sore throat/sinus pressure/ and achy body every single day. No body should have to live like this. CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

Sincerely,

Ryan

Don't you think it's time to move? And yes, healthcare is costly, and everyone here understands and has bills to pay. Why stay and suffer? How much longer is the lease or is it month to month? They cannot force you to stay there. While of course, you will probably incur fee's for breaking the lease, it would probably be in your best interest. Staying there and suffering is ridiculous. Or call Legal Aid to see if anyone can advise you regarding your lease, or call a lawyer.

Call the Board of Health in your local area, they will jump all over this. Good luck.

I had this problem at a University when I lived in the dorms. There was a significant amount of mold growing on the windows. My roommates and I were constantly violently ill. When we issued a complaint about it, we were given one bottle of sanitizer and told that would take care of the problem. It didn't. Housing refused to move us, telling us we didn't have a valid reason to move. Like you, we'd all be sick, finally start to get better, and then get sick again. It was awful. I actually needed surgery when I came home because the nonspecific illness would not go away. I know exactly what you're going through and it definitely is NO FUN!!
