Tylenol vs Motrin Informative - Fever reducer for kids

Review by DORCAS on 2007-02-08
Since it's the flu season I have had the pleasure of helping to nurse my grandkids back to health. Both the 7 month old and the 6 year old have suffered some of the same ailments. The major one being a high fever. As the parents followed all the doctors advice with prescription medications they also said to give tylenol or motrin. I gave childrens tylenol to my 6 year old as he had a 103 fever. It seems to stay at that temp without going up any more. My son and his new wife picked up my grandson and had picked up some childrens motrin. Almost immedeitly the fever went down and almost back to normal. My Daughter has also had a problem with her 6 month old not being able to keep a fever down. She bought infants motrin and got the same results. It has been a very terrible flu season for all in this area especially the children. I did not have childrens motrin when my kids were young but I can see what a wonderful tool it can be for parents when there is a fever that wants to hang on. Combined with a doctors visit and the correct prescriptions, childrens/infants motrin is a must have for the medicine chest. Hope your all in good health this flu season part of the year.

I hesitate to accept medical advice, especially when it pertains to children with 103 degree fevers, from a consumer opinion board. Just call me old fashioned...

oh for goodness sake rnick, that is why she wrote: "Combined with a doctors visit and the correct prescriptions" - this is grandma advice not "medical."
I feel exactly the same, I personally think Tylenol is useless. Thanks Dorcas, hope the kids and grandkids stay well for the rest of this cold winter. :)

Thanks Dorcas, I will relay this to my daughter regarding her children. 103 is scary.

Very helpful advice Dorcas, which I shared with two young mothers at the office today..one of whom went to K-Marts right down the street and bought Motrin to have on hand. Both Tylenol and Motrin are manufactured by reputable companies but it certainly doesn't hurt to have both on hand. What works for one child might not for another.
