TGI Fridays Complaint - Theft from your customers

Complaint
Review by Allym on 2007-02-09
PLYMOUTH, MINNESOTA -- My father took our family out for a nice dinner at TGI Fridays this last Thursday Feb 8th 2007. When the bill came and it was a good amount for 9 people they had taken out 18% gratuity my mother gave them a $25.00 gift card and said use this for the tip. We had gotten home and not only did he get gratuity they never took the 25.00 gift card off the bill or off the gratuity so the waiter ended up with a 62.00 tip.

Just be warned that they will not tell you weather or not they take gratuity you have to really look at your bill and then correct them a few times to get it right or to keep them honest.

Didn't the person who signed the credit card receipt look at the amount they were signing off on?? This all could of been avoided if the receipt had been looked over, then you could said, hey wait, what about the gift card? Whatever happened to anyone being responsible for their own actions?? You accuse them of ripping you off, you allowed it.

Skye is right. You get two chances to review your bill at a restaurant...the initial bill then the final bill once they've ran your card and/or gave you change for your cash. The person paying should make sure they amount looks correct, that all goft cards are used and that they don't add amnother tip on top of one automtatically added.

You tell 'em Skye! I imagine if you look closely you will also see the 18% gratuity was added automatically to the bill because you had such a large group. When you told them to use the card for the tip they most likely assumed you meant "in addition to" to one already on the bill.

Most resturaunts automatically add gratuity for groups of 6 or more. It's clearly marked on the bill you recieve (and are suppose to look at before you pay). The waiter didn't take it off the bill because he was told to use it for gratuity. He probably thought it was an extra tip. I doubt he thought it was his only tip because $25.00 for a grouup of 9 people is pretty cheap.

Well you should have checked it over before paying the bill. Also how do you know they did not make a mistake for accusing them of theft. How would you like it if the card was expired and you did not know it and they accused you of trying to cheat them by using an expired card. Also it's use the correct spelling for weather. You are not taking about the climate outside which is spelled weather you should have used whether.

There is no such thing as a nice dinner at T.G.I Fridays!

Boy, that's no good. You really have to look over your bill these days.

Unless you are ordering the #9 at McDonald's, then you know what you are paying for. (a meal AND a cleaning bill)

Did you get chicken wings?

If you had a substantial meal for 9 people, say $20/person, that would be $180 bucks right there. Add in drinks, another $20 or so for everyone if they're not alcoholic, AND 8% sales tax? You're looking at a tab of over $216!! 18 % Mandatory gratuity would be right around $40 bucks... so what your mom gave them, was not nearly enough. And for the trouble your group probably gave them, they deserved more.
Oh yeah, and always check the receipt before you leave or too bad, so sad.
I've been the waitress, and I've been the customer... rather be the latter cause waiters/waitresses have to suck it up when all they want to do is tell you to shut up.

Allym: the gratuity, if automatically added to your bill, will be stated on every menu...sometimes you have to look for it. Some of us learned of this (at that time..new) gratuity policy years ago the hard way when we double tipped, and a generous amount at that. IRS... the tip was left on the table in cash. For a party the size of yours a $25.00 tip is really not reasonable considering the total bill.

When you go to a restaurant expect to tip the waitperson a decent amount. They are working for a living like the rest of us. And yes, check your bill before paying. If you don't want to be bothered, and are concerned about the tip, a simple "has the gratuity been added?" normally will be sufficient. In your case, I don't see as to where there was any theft committed.

patti 25, you really took some time and figured out the tab. Good job on the math skills.
As for the gratuity, I've seen restaurants that actually have a sign displayed somewhere on the window or wall as you enter. I've never given it much thought before now. I'm sure I've double tipped without realizing it. But unless it's really bad service, I would over tip anyways. All I ask is that my drink be kept filled (soda)
