RUUD heatpumps Complaint - More ICE than heat - RUUD 4 ton package Achiver Series

Review by redred on 2007-02-10
VANCEBORO, NORTH CAROLINA -- RUUD heat pump freezes up outside coils. No help from installer or RUUD rep. Unit is great ice maker but sucks for heat. Ruud has made it impossible to contact them personally. My opinion is to steer away from Ruud products.P.S. Ruud and Rheem are same. This is my second Ruud ,both where money pits. Yes I got bitten twice.

Frozen coils could be a sign you're low on freon - you may have a leak either in the outside unit, or somewhere in your house. It may NOT be the Ruud unit at all. Have you had your system leakchecked?

I'm sure you know reverse cycle air conditioners have a low tolerance to cold. That's why colder climates using heat/cool models use the resistance heat style. I guess my question is, at around what temperature outside does it start to freeze up at? You may have to raise the thermostat a few degrees and let the unit cycle off more. This will give breaks in the flow of cold air over the coils and hopefully keep them from icing.

Not being a heatpump expert but could someone explain to me how leaking freon would freeze to coils?????
