Mazda Protoge 5 - Complaint
Review by Scotty B. on 2007-02-22
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA -- Hi, there. I purchased a 2002 Protoge 5 as a new vehicle and it has been the WORST car that I have ever owned. It started to develop problems at less than two years of age. Five new struts (the dealer replaced a defective strut with another defective strut!)on a car less than a couple of years old. This followed by bulbs having to constantly replaced, tires and brakes lasting only two years and as of today, $1,200.00 of engine repairs this month and over $1,000.00 of repairs last month (this does include some maintenance). All in a five year old car that has had the oil changed once every three thousand miles and all scheduled maintenance done. It is driven less than 20 miles per day and has only 53,000 miles on it. I declined to have the $1,200.00 fix-it done today and will leave this piece of junk in my garage until I can get rid of it. I have never had any car, both import and domestic, give me so many problems in such a short time frame. To all who read this, I would highly recommend that you not buy a Mazda! It was my first (and last) car from this manufacturer. The reliability is terrible and upkeep is expensive. I will stick to Honda, Toyota and Subaru in the future. My last car, a Honda, went 12 years without any problems! This car sucks! sucks! sucks! Buyer beware! Also, avoid the extended warranties as they are a rip-off and don't cover many repairs. Zoom-Zoom, indeed.

Sorry to hear this. I own a Mazda B2500 pickup truck (of course it's made by Ford) and have over 120,000 miles on it...I think I have replaced the tires, brakes and some little engine component that I can't remember (it was about 40 bucks). I still have the original clutch, even.

After much research, my next car is going to be a Mazda 3. It consistently is rated the top of the small car class, over the Toyota Matrix, Honda Civic, etc. It's fit and finish is great! I'll really dive into the reliability ratings, however, before I make this decision, based on this review.

Thanks, rnick. The 3's are supposed to be very good though the 6's and the RX-8 have bad reliability reviews from Consumer Reports. Good for you to look up reliability ratings, something I neglected to do when purchasing the Protoge 5. Good for you with your truck. I will most likely fix my car and get rid of it in a few months. I did drop by the Subaru dealer and they look very attractive. The Honda's that I looked at are a bit less than exciting. Have heard great things about Toyota's from my co-workers. Best of luck with your 3 if you end up buying one. The good news is that after I switched dealers (the people that I bought if from were not too good), I did find a good one. They are actually very nice!
