PLUS Rent-a-Car Complaint - Beware of this outfit!

Review by fender1960 on 2007-03-01
Anyone travelling to Liberia, Costa Rica, DO NOT use Plus Rent a car. They don't pick up the vehicle from your hotel at the agreed upon time, so you never get your deposit slip back. I got scammed out of $750 U.S. Another fellow Canadian that I spoke with got scammed for $1000 U.S from the same company. We both contacted the owner of this company by phone, and he played ignorant saying this was the first time he hear of such a thing.

I have been trying to dispute this with VISA for the last 6 weeks. I now find out that the owner manufactured a fake damage report saying I did $800
damage to the vehicle. How can I prove otherwise?
By the time they came to pick up the vehicle from the hotel, I was already on my way back home.

Renting a car in Costa Rica would be scary with any company I would think. The roads there are horrible... and the drivers are crazy... Plus like you said, there is no way for you to dispute any problems. Best to stick with public transportation...

I rented from Avis there and when my vehicle broke down they replaced it with another. Roads are very interesting, to say the least, to drive on. The main highway from San Jose to Liberia is 2-lane (not each way but a total of 2 lanes) and for long stretches there are not any lines painted on the pavement. And lots of trucks and busses. Like I said, Interesting driving.

For the last couple of years ever since Dollar ripped us off we now take digital photo's of every side of the car when returning it or having it picked up. Takes a minute but sure covers you from the crooks that run these rental car companies. When possible at check in when they print out your receipt I write on it "car returned without damage" and have the person sign it. Once an attendant would not sign it, gave her a $5 tip and she signed. Talk about a sleazy business to be in. I rate rental car companies in the same class as tow truck operators.

Good advice Superbowl. TImboss, I know what you mean about no painted lines down there. Interesting driving indeed, especially up in the mountains.
