Moving Van Lines Complaint - Refusal to pay for damaged items - damaged furniture

damaged furniture - Complaint
Review by chlajade on 2007-03-15
TAMPA, FLORIDA -- After moving our household from Florida to Nevada, Moving Van Line wanted only cash instead of a check and held our furniture hostage. They only partially delivered our items and even though we paid an extra $350.00 for special wrapping on fragile items, they were still damaged on arrival. Now the company won't take responsibility and their insurance company (Anthem Claim Management) denied our complaint because we signed a bill of laden when the furniture was delivered. We had to sign the bill of laden or they wouldn't unpack our goods from the truck. Only after signing and paying would the delivery men unpack our goods from their truck. They held our furniture hostage. Do not do business with this company! MOVING VAN LINES in Tampa, Florida.

You might try to bring some pressure via the Surface Transporation Board (www.stb.dot.gov). They regulate the interstate trucking business and they take bills of lading very seriously. If you have proof that you were forced to sign the B/L before taking delivery you might be able to make things mighty uncomfortable for the movers. Good luck.

A co-worker had a similar problem moving his stuff up from Florida by a different mover. The movers played games with all kinds of excuses. When they finally showed up (a month late) most of his possessions were either damaged or missing. He filed a claim with Anthem Claim Management, including photos and a notarized statement of damages. His total should have been around $24,000 and all they paid was $400.

I had damage done by a mover (not a state to state move just a local move.) I simply wrote in the damaged items on the bill of lading that I signed and indicated why I was signing. I also wrote out a check for the amount quoted and not the amount they were overcharging. The police were called and I was told that even if I paid $1 it was not "theft of services" and they could do nothing.

I had problems with this same mover. However, mine was more of being overcharged by 1100 dollars. There "customer service" lady was the rudest person I have dealt with and they refused to refund the money owed. I would warn everyone that this company scams people.
