Menards Complaint - Providing motorized carts for the handicapped.

Complaint
Review by Gardening customer on 2007-04-06
MARION, ILLINOIS -- The New Marion Illinois store does not provide carts for the handicapped. In fact when asked a sarcastic clerk said 'none of our stores provide them, and we don't intend to either.'

That may be true, but handicapped money spends just as well as able bodied....and we have more time to shop.

Hope they change their mind.

Providing carts is a courtesy, not a right. Maybe they aren't providing them do to liability issues?

Why not write to them, and ask them?? It's a very valid question. Here is the contact address.

I think you could count on one hand how many stores out of a thousand provide powered carts. Wouldn't those who need a special motorized cart already be using their own upon arrival?

Why do you assume that handicaped people have more time to shop than non handicaped people. That's not always true and that holds holes in your otherwise fine complaint.

Slim, I understand where you are coming from, but what about someone who just had, say knee surgery?? I have seen people get off their crutches, and into those motorized carts. I have only seen those motorized carts in supermarkets.

When my mother lost the ability to walk due to arthritis, we had a wheelchair for her. Why do people expect to be given everything? Sorry, but 99% of the time, when I see people in those motorized carts, their situation could be remedied by a weight loss of about 200 lbs. Maybe that makes me unsensitive, but I've been there and done that with someone who was in a wheelchair and people have to quit making everyone else responsible for their issues. We were responsible for my mom, she was responsible for herself, not the store and not its employees.

I have to agree with Sherry here. So often the one in the cart is a 400 pounder rolling by with a load of Ho-Hos

No offense intended and hope none taken Gardening, but stores now have handicapped parking, handicapped entrances, handicapped restrooms and so forth. Perhaps Menards weighed individuals needing motorized carts vs those who didn't and decided it was not cost effective.

I went into my local grocery store a number of years ago and the cashiers were still in shock at what they had just seen. An able bodied man and his young son (assume it was his son) had loaded up a motorized cart onto the back of their truck and driven off. No license plate was observed..it happened so quickly. That store now has one cart rather than two. When that one is gone, I don't expect it will be replaced. I understand they are quite expensive.

Sherry, BRAVO! If more people took responsibility for themselves many of the perceived problems in this big, bad world would be easily resolved. I'm sure your mother appreciated all you did for her.

Skye, Home Depot, Lowe's, K-Mart, Wal-Mart are just a few of the non-supermarket companies that provide Mart Karts for those who need them, usually. I have to use a scooter, and before I finally got mine, I had numerous times when I would have to sit near the front of the store to wait for a cart, only to see some teen-ager come riding up on one. As far as people who need them should have their own, that is just downright cruel, as sometimes, it either takes a long time to get your insurance and Medicare to approve one, or they won't approve one because you won't be using it in your home. I am not familiar with Menard's, but rest assured I will not be shopping there, even if I were to find one. You people are just beautiful, you have no concept what it is like to be disabled, when you can become disabled in the blink of an eye. FYI, morbid obesity is a disability, and most of the time, there is not much the person can do about it. I doubt if any of you will, but I invite you to check out www.wheelchairjunkie.com. This is a forum site where many of us with mobility issues discuss many things from problems we have to upcoming laws to the best vehicle to buy to meet our unique needs. I bet if you come up and visit for a bit, read 40 or 50 posts, it might give you a whole new outlook on people with disabilities. If you can't be bothered, then keep your thoughts to yourself, because you have no idea what you are blowing off about.

I have worked for Menards for 9+ years. We have tons of customers complaining that we do not have motorized carts. My belief is that John Menard is simply too cheap to provide them for all of his stores. Our cash register and other equipment are outdated as can be. Not to mention north facing doors with the registers close as can be to them....all the better that we may enjoy that cold north wind blowing in, along with the snow. Some things will never change with this company........ sign me Disgruntled

Go into any Wal-Mart and watch the cart parade. Able bodied people using a cart and dont need to. Guarantee you only 25% of the people using them actually need it. If the crutch is available people will use it.
.
Menards will personally issue you a helping team member to assist anyone around the store in a store wheel chair. Now that is service. Not a fancy motorized one but I believe it still gets the job done.
