Polly's Book Store Complaint - Phone call

Review by Outsider on 2007-04-25
OMAHA, NEBRASKA -- This a letter I sent to Polly's book store in Omaha, Ne.

Dear Polly,

Today, April 25, I called your store to see if you had a certain book in stock.

There was no answer, just an answering machine. I said, "If no one will answer the phone when the store is open I'll just call somewhere else."

That's EVERYTHING I said. I hung up, called a different store, and found the book I needed. I've been trying to think of what this person would expect someone to say when a call gets answered by a machine during open business hours. I thought what I said was perfectly appropriate. I suppose I could have said will you call me back, but how would I know if someone was even there? Was I supposed to wait for some unspecified time for someone to call? I wanted to find a book and I didn't want to wait around for a call back.

A couple minutes later my phone rang. A person said, "Did you just call and leave a rude message?" I said, "Yes I called, no, I didn't say anything rude."

She started yelling that I was rude, my other phone line started ringing, I said, "I need to answer another call." She yelled, "Ba___rd!", and slammed the phone down. This person was SO wrong to do this!

I can't believe this person would have the nerve to use some kind of either caller ID or *69 to get my number and actually call! Then this person has the gall to call me a Ba___rd!

I'm sure you don't train your employees to act like that.

If this person, you have noticed I never called her a lady, she's NO lady, acts like this over a phone call I can't imagine what she would do if something bad actually happened.

That's my letter, did I do something wrong?

Seems like there was rudeness on both sides (if the situation is being presented in an accurate fashion).
There are plenty of valid reasons why an answering machine might have caught the call during open hours, and your quick little recorded statement (to me) does sound somewhat smarmy and attitudinal.
As for the 'call back', totally not necessary either.
So, no brownie points for anybody.
My advice? Next time you encounter an answering machine when calling a business, just hang up.

I just Googled Polly's and it looks like a little store from the photo. It is possible that they were helping a customer at the store and couldn't get to the phone in time. Given your impatience I imagine that you would be p.o'd if you were at the store and the employee left you to go answer the phone. Actually I consider what you said was rude, but no it doesn't justify their response. Try leaving a polite message first asking them to call you and then if they don't return your call you can say something.

You were rude which doesn't excuse the rudeness of the person that you called back, but you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
