Brueggers Bagel Bakery Complaint - Not Fair

Review by kristen55 on 2007-04-30
MCMURRY, PENNSYLVANIA -- Recently I was terminated from Bruegger's because of my association with another employee. Apparently in my position as a supervisor, it is against company policy to have any dealings or friendships of any kind with employees beneath you. That was the reason they gave me for my termination, but I know there was more behind it than that. There is another supervisor there who is best friends with some of employees that work there, but they are not doing an investigation into that. Alot of the things that were going on had absolutely nothing to do with me. Food costs were high, because alot of the employees would give alot away to their friends. But they would always think it was me. The first person you suspect is the "Black One". Being the only African- American one working there I felt like I was more scrutinized than anyone else. The asst. manager went into the register to see what I rang up for someone I knew, but not for anyone else. They were going out of their ways to find every little thing I did wrong, as grounds for termination. They are prejudice. The asst. manager, gen. manager, and a supervisor were all conspiring to have me fired. My thing is, if they are going to fire me for that, fire him. Also the other supervisor who is friends with alot of her co-workers. But they aren't because they love her. But she is breaking company policy, so the same should happen to her. I did somewhat enjoy that job, except for feeling a bit singled out. I wasn't given a warning. It's upsetting It happened this way, but I would also like to seek further action. I feel I was wrongfully terminated, and that the other employees should receive the same for what they did.

Alot is two words--'a lot.' Save your drama for your mama and put the race card back in the deck. How are the bagels?

Unless you have some sort of solid evidence that race played a part in your termination, it's just conjecture. I mean, they hired you, right? If your skin color was such an issue, I have to feel as though you would never have been considered for the job in the first place.

Sounds like a clear cut case of racism to me. It's too bad in the year 2007 such practices still exist. Don't give up and keep us updated on how this goes. Good luck and thanks for posting your story.

Their bagels are awesome, Ponie. Most companies have very strict policies stating that there can be NO relationships between employees. The simple reason is that when the relationship goes sour, someone always sues the company because they were sexually 'harassed' by their management.

I agree with heaven.

OP's words.

Seems you broke the rules and were terminated for that. How is this not fair?? You, a supervisor, knew that was a big no no. Life isn't fair anyway. And unless you are under contract, they can terminate you at any time, as they say for "just cause".

If race was an issue you wouldn't have been promoted to or hired as a supervisser. I don't see a "clear cut case of racism" here. You said employees were giving alot of food away to their friends. Isn't it yuor job to make sure that doesn't happen? It sounds like you were to friendly with your employees and letting them get away with too much and thats why they fired you.

Are you sure that they fired you for being friends with the employees, because I doubt that is their policy. Infact they would like to have the management be friendly with their employees. Anyways I have a feeling that though you were friendly with the employees you were not friendly with the other managers. If you were white, green. blue or yellow they would have fired you as well. It has nothing to do with your skin colour.

Skye sounds like she knows what she's talking about. Why does everything have to be about race??

I agree with Skye!
