All Cable/Satellite Companies Complaint - DVR Program Recording Schedules Inaccurate

Review by Lionel on 2007-05-05
Have you noticed all the advertising from the Cable and Satellite companies for their DVRs? They want you to spend the extra money each month so you can time shift your TV viewing for programs that air when you aren't home.

What they don't tell you is that when you use their programming guide to schedule the recording that some of the programs will record starting after the program has begun or end before the program ends because their programming guide is not accurate.

The Cable/Satellite companies will tell you (as they've told me) that this is the fault of the broadcasters. This is true but the Cable/Satellite companies are not doing anything to force the broadcasters to publish accurate broadcast times.

Some broadcasters do such as ABC and TCM but other such as FMC do not. I recently recorded a movie for which the recording ended several minutes before the movie ended because it ran longer than the published time. I did not know this until several days after the recording when I was able to view it. This is not the first time this has happened - in fact it is a frequent situation on some channels.

I have communicated with my local city government about this and with my local cable company. All agree it is a problem but no one has a solution.

Be aware................

Our DVR box (through Comcast) has the ability to customize the recording time to go a few minutes beyond the scheduled time... This often helps correct any problems of missing the end of a recorded show.

Sparticus - that is true as does my DVR from Astound. However you have to know this in advance to customize the recording time. Given the number of VCRs that are still around with the blinking 12:00 clock I would imagine that adjusting the time frame for a scheduled recording will not be easy for many. The broadcasters have a responsibility to publish accurate times and the DVR/cable/satellite companies have a responsibility to 'encourage' accurate times.
