Honda Complaint - We need a 4th transmission in our 2001 Honda Odyssey - transmission, emission system, brakes

transmission, emission system, brakes - Complaint
Review by snowwhite on 2007-05-07
GIG HARBOR, WASHINGTON -- After much research back in 2000, we purchased a 2001 Honda Odyssey Van. It was supposedly the best van, more reliable, best warranty, highest safety rating in it's class.

The long and the short of it; at 117,000 miles, we are in need of our 4th transmission. The original transmission died at 49,000 miles (the dealership, West Hills Honda in Bremerton) was great about securing a "new" transmission--turned out to be a rebuilt, but they also secured a 3rd transmission when #2 died at 81,000. I have no complaints with dealership----just their product!

However, the replacement on transmission #3 is not going as smoothly----the company that re-manufactures these (Howard Engineering in Los Angeles, CA) says they will let us buy a new or rebuild transmission at their cost. How nice--on a product that is obviously substandard anyway!

Our van has had issues with the emission system and brakes since month one. We have gone thru 6 sets of brakes ( no one can figure out why) the care shakes like it is ready to explode) and as of yesterday, the traction control system light came on---can someone shout "lemon" along with me???

We were seriously considering buying a Honda Pilot--however, when I went to the website for Howard Engineering, guess what came up as readily available? Transmissions for 2004,2005, 2006 Honda Pilots!! Aaacckk! I'm running fast and furiously away from that thought!

Honda, your Odyssey Vans are junk--I have several friends who own them as well and have similar problems. I think our van takes the lemon award for transmissions, tho.

I WISH we would have bought a Toyota that year.

I'd have sold it after the first transmission

I hate hondas. they are the most overrated cars out there. you wish you had bought a toyota. I guess you don'tlike American autos.I will never buy one again. I think of the trade deficet with japan and their ability to make up stories so they won't import our goods. We can sell them rice for half of what they would pay for it but they rather have them consume local rice. their snow is different so they cannot import our skis. Also do you remember the downfall of our steel industry or the computer chip industry. They don'tplay fair and they would never buy anything we make because they think we are lazy. Just wondering if they are still having elephants killed for their ivory, and don't forget all the whales they slaughter every year.Thant you for supporting their economy.

Ditto: PirateWithParrot. Buy a big Ford truck like mine, you can push the broken down Honda's to the side of the road. Only probelm is the only thing it does not pass are gas stations.

I had a 2001 Accord that needed a tranny,It was done under warranty. They even gave me a rental for a week.

I had to chuckle at the "I would have sold it after the 1st transmission...." comment, as this is exactly what I would've done after tranny #2! On the advice of a salesperson, no less! My hubby wasn't quite ready to sell---oh well!

I agree with dodgedart--I hate Hondas--but that's about all we'll agree on! We do like American autos and we own two Mustangs and a Chevy Silverado. I think we've done our share to support the American economy! A vacation may be in order....with a large chill pill.

I have owned 4 Honda products and was their biggest fan to all that would listen. Now that I have nothing but problems with our Odyssey (transmission, many sensors), the dealer(Brantford Honda) and Honda Canada, I will never purchase one again. I will also tell of my terrible customer service issues with both Honda Canada and the dealer.

All cars break down, you just pay more for a Honda. It's better to buy domestic to support our workers. Yes Honda has plants here but they don't pay them 1/2 as much!

Our story is identical to yours. After much research, we bought a 2001 Honda Odyssey, the top choice by Consumer Reports. After approx. 20,000 miles, the transmission died. Honda repaired it and said it was "as good as new". I replied, "I hope so, because the original one only lasted 20,000 miles!" Transmission problems and excessive brake and tire wear were due to the '01 Odyssey being an extremely heavy vehicle and the transmission being too lightweight for the weight of the van. Honda extended the warranty and prior to extension expiring, started having transmission problems again and had dealership check it. They said it was fine and a few months later, the transmission went again. NOW, I am having problems with the emissions systems. I have never had an emission problem with any vehicle before my Honda. I had two Hondas, but now have a Scion and a Toyota. Have had problems with both Hondas. Have had no such problems with the Scion or the Toyota. We will NEVER buy a Honda again. THERE IS A REASON WHY THEY ONLY GIVE YOU A 3 YEAR/36,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. IF HONDA WAS REALLY BUILDING QUALITY VEHICLES, IT WOULD NOT COST THEM ANYTHING TO GIVE THEIR BUYERS A LONGER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY! AS IT IS, THEY HAVE THE SHORTEST POWERTRAIN WARRANTY OF ANY CAR MAKER AND RIDICULOUSLY (AND FALSELY) CLAIM THAT THE REASON IS THAT THEIR VEHICLES DON'T REQUIRE A LONGER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY! HUH???
