Clemson Automobile Service Complaint - Will you pay $400 for a job that can be done for $200?

Review by tiger1 on 2007-05-14
CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA -- Their hourly labor is $80 while just 2 miles away you can get $50/hour. They will charge $400 for replacing brake roters and pads while the low cost one only charges $200. I decided to try another shop but they charged me $42 for an estimate. When I showed my disagreement about this charge, the manager was rude and asked me to pay and leave. International students, do not go to this shop. Be prepared the manager will say something ugly to you! He asked me to go back to where I was from!

You sure that you want to cheap-out on a brake job?

Im sure that the Clemson Automobile wont only cheat International students... they will also cheat other customers who dont do their research first before taking their car in for repairs.

Actually $400 for a brake job that includes new rotors sounds like what a first rate independent shop would charge if they are using quality parts. $200 for a brake job that includes new rotors is what a cheap shop with cheap parts would charge. Brakes are too important to save a few bucks getting it done poorly. I think the first shop was trying to save an international student from crashing his car. You owe him an apology.

The poster didn't say that the shop was cheating him because he's an international student. He said that others should consider not going there because the guy would say something "ugly". And I happen to agree that telling someone to "go back where they came from" is a VERY ugly, inappropriate and ignorant thing to say. And the poster certainly owes no one an apology for taking his business elsewhere. Particularly after having to deal with bigotry like that.

I agree with Sarah May and also Pomona Guy.

I don't think he owes anybody an apology.

That IS ugly....shame on him. I don't suppose there's anyone higher up to compain to?

BTW I live on the other side of Walhalla....neat to finally come across someone on here in my area.

First of all, don't just go for the cheapest mechanic you can find...your life may depend on it; would you have the guy on the corner do your surgury b/c it's cheaper?). Also, shops can charge what they want, and don't have to take the competition's prices into account if they don't want to. They can also charge for estimates/checking out the problem, but that should be disclosed before you agree- were there signs that stated this, or was it on the work order?
The rude comments are completely out of line!

I think anyone can go anywhere that they can effort. It does not give the store owner or business owner to right to discriminate them in any shape or form because they are from another country.
tiger1, not everybody is bilingual be proud of what you got! Some people get irritated by this because they are jealous of your knowledge.
