Koons Ford of Sterling, Virginia Complaint - Misleading Consumer - Used Truck Purchase
STERLING, VIRGINIA -- On Sunday, May 27, we found a used pickup truck advertised on the Internet by Koons Ford of Sterling that seemed to meet our needs. We called Matt, the contact, at 1-866-461-1831 and left a message that we were interested in stock number 0289018B. A little while later, Matt called us, and we described the truck to him: a dark green 2001 Ford Ranger XLT, with automatic transmission, selling for $9998. I am handicapped, and require an automatic transmission. Matt said he wasn't working that day, but that Syed, a salesman with whom he worked closely, would be there all day. Syed later called us, and confirmed that he would have the truck ready and waiting for us. Despite the 62-mile round trip journey (which in the traffic turned out to be a two-hour-plus trip), we decided to cancel our plans and go see the truck. When we got there, the salesman showed us to a RED truck, standard shift, in pretty rough condition, selling for $12,000. We protested that we had come to see a dark green truck, with automatic transmission, selling for $9998. Syed called Matt, talked to him for a short time, and then turned and told us the dark green truck we had come to see had been sold TWO WEEKS PREVIOUSLY! He then opened the door of the red truck to invite us to try it out. I don't know if this was a bait-and-switch maneuver, or just rank incompetence on the part of Matt. However, if you are tempted to drive to Koons Ford of Sterling to see a particular vehicle, I'd recommend you try a dealer that knows what stock they have, and doesn't mislead the consumer. By the way: the truck that was sold two weeks ago - it's STILL advertised for sale on the Internet - a day after my visit.
