Home Depot Informative - Beware! Get at least 3 bids
FRESNO, CALIFORNIA -- We had 2 bids from reputable local builders in the area.
One sales rep. was very well prepared and even was CAD equipped to provide us with clear drawings of the proposed sunroom. 2 days later we received a totally typed up package in the mail.
His quote came in very reasonable for the basic room installed. It did not include the cement pad to be laid, or any moving of sprinklers, etc. It also did not include floating a wall at the common wall of the house so the paint would match the interior of the sunroom. He did gives us a 10% discount good for 3 weeks.
The second builder was not quite as organized but personable and it became obvious very experienced in all phases of construction. He came in with a similar bid.
The 3rd was Home Depot. Lots of demos of the secure and weather-proof windows offered by Temo sunrooms. (A big box full of gadgets!) We were almost bowled over the 3X cost over the 2 previous bids. Yes, they did included floating the common wall, the pad, and more electrical outlets. But subtract all that we were still an easy $6K or 7K over the lowest quote so far.
And that was AFTER we were offered a $9000 discount from HD if we acted today!!!
Well he agreed to go out another week so we could think about it. ("But PLEASE don't tell my boss I did this!")(you see..he was doing us a favor.. lol)
Also, the first two bidders were totally open about providing local referrals.
HD said he 'could' find a couple, but to give us the 'best deal' asked if we would be willing to let people see OUR addition, and have their sign on our front lawn for 30 days for advertising purposes. He left us with his hand-drawn copy and a few figures.
Needless to say, or decision is a little easier now having to balance only between two reputable contractors.
Home Depot is a great place to shop for many items, and even get some good advice, but when it comes to someone else to do the work for you, I strongly recommend to get as more quotes.
