Gold's Gym International, Inc Complaint - Unable To Cancel / Class Action Law Suit - Bad Billing/Cancellation

Bad Billing/Cancellation - Complaint
Review by dreamskinner on 2007-06-15
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- I too joined to get healthy, but when I realized I couldn't afford the expenses, after I already made a down payment, I went in 3 days later to cancel, but they would not allow me, but instead misdirected me to a 1-800 number to call, in which I was sent to machine every time for about a month's worth of calling. I then was harassed for 6 months, almost daily that I had to pay every cent and plus some, for services I never received. I have never stepped foot into that gym, and now they are trying to go after my credit.

It seems like they've done this to MANY people, and I think it's time we should step up and have a CLASS ACTION LAW suit from across the country.

Anyone else is in on this?

dreamskinner, that is there scam and they do do it all the time. The sad thing is you signed the contract and there isn't much you can do about it. Sorry

Maybe you could talk to a lawyer? Good luck

It's way too late to do anything about it. But a class action suit won't help you. The lawyers will get rich and the class group gets a coupon for a discount on membership.

Next time you sign up for something, read the contract first to be aware of your rights and especially the cancellation policy. Many contracts make it damn difficult for the consumer to back out.

Class action may not be the answer... but getting a lawyer to get them off your back might be worthwhile... if you can find an affordable one. Any lawyers in the family? ;-)

I signed up for 24 hr fitness and was shocked by the upfront charges on the contract. I think it made me keep my membership longer than I wanted because I needed to get my money's worth. At least it made me get in shape.

Whether or not you "stepped foot into that gym" is immaterial. You signed a contract stating you would pay $x for so many months. If you don't pay it you are in breach of contract. It is a shame, but pay it off so you maintain your credit. If you use a lawyer you must figure the cost of that versus just paying it off. Class action lawsuits punish the defendant, make the lawyers rich, and the consumers get a $10 voucher or some other almost worthless asset.

I worked for them for about 3 years. Any of the information required to cancel a membership is clearly stated on the signed contracts. abc cannot threaten to ruin credit as they are not a collection agency they are just a third party biller. they just send your account back to gold's and the gym makes the decision to send you account to their own collections agency.PLEASE READ CONTRACTS/ AGREEMENTS/LEASES BEFORE SIGNING. I learned this principle in junior high...

My partner and I signed a contract with Gold's because I was dianosed as being a dietbetic... Well, I listed my Mom as an emergency contact, when my partner and I signed the contract.. I did not read the small print, and I have to pay 63.14 for (2) years. $1400.00 for absolutely nothing. I have also have a disability and sound like a feamale because of a car accident.. Well they said a women called and gave the excuse to call my mother, when she did not call at all.. Because of there shady business tactics, I am left to pay, but i will not step foot into the establishment. I do not know how to deal with this other than to pay it, and just let be a good lesson to read the contract before signimg, but I do want out, because these people do not know what condidentuality means.. I have cancelled my bank cards, and had them reissued to keep them out of my accounts... Ofcourse they have threatened me saying they will get there money one way or another. I have paid it manually... However, if someone wants to contact me and start to fight back, I have nothing to lose. I would very much like to be heard... Thanks...

MISSKI, reading the contract does not help if the contract was mispresented and/or changed after the fact. People should not have to have an attorney sitting beside them in order to sign a gym membership to ensure that Gold's does not misrepresent its contracts, but apparently that's the way it is.

Also, MISSKI, should reading not also apply to Gold's itself and those billing for it? I was in contact with both ABC and their new biller, AllState Financial Group. AllState asked me to fax copies of my credit card statements and contract to them, because I claimed to have been double charged (it was apparently during the time period of the billing company changeover). I did so. You're absolutely right, they did NOTHING with that information except to just forward it to the gym . They reviewed nothing, they were familiar with nothing I sent in when I called them about why I hadn't been contacted about the results of their research. The gym also reviewed nothing because they said all charges, including the double charges, were valid.
