Walgreens Complaint - 26 is to young to buy Alli?!?!?
STEPHENSCITY, VIRGINIA -- So today was the first day that the new FDA approved OTC diet drug, Alli. I've got to have it. So I go in and grab the last starter pack on the shelf and proceed to the register (I'll add that the box states that you have to be 18 to purchase). Only to be told that I have to be 27 years old to purchase this product. I felt like a teenager trying to buy liquor! This just sounded weird to me so I double checked with the pharmacist. He said that it was a FDA guideline. This just sounds arbitrary to me so I Google the age restriction. Nothing. I check both the Alli and Walgreens website. Nothing. Finally I call the FDA helpline. Viola! There is no such regulation. So I call Walgreens corporate and they tell me their policy states that the consumer must be 21 to purchase Alli and that it must be a computer problem and they will contact the store immediately. Fine by me.
But one serious question....I am a stay at home mother with only one year of college. Why did I have enough insight to gather that something was amiss about the age restriction of a pharmaceutical, when the pharmacist, someone holding at least a BS, didn't even think that 27 was an odd number and that maybe he should double check?
Although I do have to say that the other employees in the store were extremely helpful and pleasant.
