The Works Complaint - Horrible Service/No Service

Review by maskman9995 on 2007-06-20
HOLLAND, PENNSYLVANIA -- I had called The Works to order a sandwich, an employee answered and put me on hold. Then another employee picked up the phone, I had started to give my order and she slams the phone in my ear. I had called back right away and she slams the phone in my ear again. So I call back again and ask to speak to the manager, he is out. Call back in 30 minutes ask for the manager again, was told his name is Mike and he is the owner of the place. He basically tells me you were hanged up on because you have an accent and the employee did not wanted to listen to you. So he made me feel that foreigners are not welcome at his restaurant.

I will never order anything from The Works in Holland, Pa and would advice everyone else to stay clear from this place!

What kind of accent do you have Maskman?

Take an English class and loose the accent. Then you can place phone orders with no fear. When I call or get a call from someone in India either selling or acting as a CSR I hang up on them at once. No I am not a biggot, but last I heard our official language was still English in the Good ole' USA?

Superbowl, I think you must be related to this pizza place. I have lived in this country for 30 years and never had encountered such rudeness from a public business! Also may I remind you of where your ancestors were born in, unless ofcourse you are American-Indian.

superbowl take an English class and learn the difference between "lose" and "loose". Sorry but I couldn't resist. :)

Maskman, no relation to the fine eating establishment in Holland, Pa. Though I will make it a point to eat there when I'm in the area to see what dialect of American-Indian they speak. After 30 years you would think you could lose the accent and speak the language? Try faxing your orders in then they can't hang up on you.

Time to move to Pomona in California, Maskman. 80% of the city has an accent, so you will be welcome here. Call Country Quick Market on Mission Boulevard and they'll make you a great sandwich!

Superbowl, the USA doesn't have an "official" language. English is the de facto language. Many states have adopted official languages but not Pennsylvania.

Telling the OP to lose his accent is rude and uncalled for.

FYI, if you have to say, "I am not a bigot but...", you probably are a bigot.

Brenda, no bigot here. I will check up on the "official language" thing, you could be 100% correct. I am very tired of people trashing a business because they could not understand the worker or consumer, either way. If I don't understand someone at a business I try my best to communicate somehow, we have all been there before. (unless it's a CSR in India) The last thing I would ever do is trash a business in a public forum because they could not understand me. It's not OK to trash a Frenchman in France over a communication problem, but it's OK to do it here? Why? Speak the local language or find another way to communicate but don't come on M3C and trash a good business helping the US economy.

You say you would try to communicate, they didn't even TRY to understand the OP. They heard his accent and hung up. The manager didn't say, "My employee couldn't understand you", he said that she/he didn't want to listen to him. Plus, just because he has an accent doesn't mean he doesn't speak English!

I've worked in retail before and there have been plenty of people that I couldn't understand. Old people who mumbled, people who talk to fast or too soft, and, sure, people with accents. There is no way I would have ever turned away a customer because I had a hard time understanding them.

What do you expect foreigners to do? Hire a voice coach to teach them how to drop an accent? You don't just loose an accent because it's been 30 years. It's not enough that he speaks English, he has to lose any evidence that he isn't from America?

Maskmann, there are a lot of complaints posted on this site with the claim of racism, with no facts to back up the claim and they get people pretty fired up. If what you wrote is what happened, then clearly this is a case of racism. Unfortunately, there will still be rude comments posted about how you should learn English better or fax in your request, etc. I for one, think it is pathetic that as much as this country promotes diversity, we are really very intolerant to anyone that is different than what we think is 'normal.' Thanks for sharing, I'm sorry for your experience at The Works.

I would like to hear the other side of this story. I'm sure there are two sides and The Works version is probably different than the OP's.
