Verizonwireless Complaint - Early termination fee
CONNECTICUT -- I have been a verizon cell phone customer for about as long as they have been in business. in July, 2005 I upgraded my phone to a newer model and evidently was given a new 2 yr contract because of the upgrade. 2 weeks ago I thought that my contract was going to be up in July, around the 4th or 5th, because online it stated gthat I would be eligible to upgrade again on that date. I decided that because i didn't use my phone very often, 2 or 3 times a month, I would go with the pay-as-you-go phone. I checked online and found that Cingular-AT&T was the best plan according to the survey that I looked at. I ordered one of the phones and when it came in I called Verizon wireless about cancelling my service as it was up ion a few days. Also asked about keeping my same phone number. I was told that it would not be a problem and that when the new phone arrived just call to have it switched to the new service, they would allow me to use my same phone number and the service to verizon would be cancelled automatically. I did what I was told to do and they switched everything over with no problem. I now get a bill from Verizon Wireless for $170.00 for an early termination fee. I couldn't believe it. The firat time I called the person I spoke to tole me there wasn't any problem and never told me that I would be charged an early termination fee. I called Verizone and they informed me that because I upgraded in September 2005 I was under a new contract. These people are unethical and should not be allowed to do business in this fashion. They beg you to upgrade so they can keep their hooks into you. I was paying $40.00 a month for a phone I barely used and now they got the nerve to charge me a $170.00 termination fee? There has to be someway to make these people accountable for this type of way they do business and get people scammed like this.
