DirecTV Inc Complaint - Charge for Returned Receiver
After 11 months of DirecTV with no complaints, I decided to cancel the service because I wanted to reduce my expenses. The service rep I spoke to when I signed up explicitly told me that there was no obligation and I could cancel at any time without a penalty.
After requesting cancellation and explaining my reasons I was told that DirecTV would send boxes to ship my receivers (4) back to them. She also said that there would be a fee for early termination. I explained that I had agreed to DirecTV service because they had assured me that there would be no termination fee. She seemed bemused and said that their agreement required the fee. I decided not to argue the point at that time intending to make my case later. The boxes arrived, we packed up 4 receivers with the remotes and sent them back to DirecTV.
Two weeks later I noticed a charge against my checking account. Since I had not authorized a charge I called DirecTV and after a very long process of being transferred from one person to another I reached someone who promised to research the matter and call me back. No call ever came.
I called my bank to report an unauthorized charge. A bank representative took 50 minutes (while I was on hold) to talk to DirecTV. He was able to provide the tracking numbers and to show that the receiver they were charging for had indeed arrived at their facility. Eventually DirecTV promised the bank rep that a refund would be issued within 3 to 4 business days. Two weeks later no refund. I called DirecTV spoke to a very rude employee who told me that her records showed that a refund had been mailed to me. She said they send refund checks instead of simply reversing the charge on your debit or credit card. Another week has gone by and I'm still waiting.
There seems to be a pattern of fraudulent and/or deceptive marketing practices by this company. Any lawyers looking for a class action?
