Circuit City Complaint - Defective laptop
BERWYN, ILLINOIS -- I bought a Toshiba laptop from the Circuit City store #3120 in Berwyn, IL and the next day the computer was suddenly turning off whether I was plugged into the outlet or using the battery. When I went to the store to exchange the machine, the customer service rep immediately said that I would have to pay a 15% restocking fee without offering to have the technician take a look or listening to my description of the problem. When I argued that the computer's power problems were due to defective hardware, the customer service rep came up with all sorts of illogical excuses why the machine was broken (power surge even though the computer had the same problems when running on the battery; the User Account Control setting being turned off in Windows Vista even though I didn't know how a Windows setting could prevent a machine from turning on). I went to Circuit City store 3131 in Chicago (Lincoln Park), IL and was immediately directed to the Firedog technician who confirmed that there was a hardware problem. I was able to exchange the machine without any further questions. Store 3120 needs to train their customer service reps that they shouldn't provide technical guidance when they aren't technicians.
