Truman Medical Lakewood Complaint - Care Giving - Long Term Healthcare

Review by scouty on 2007-07-11
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- I am very unhappy with the care giving by nurses & CNA's . I have witnessed patients sitting in there rooms with soil undergarments, heavy urine smells from the bathrooms, overall poor housecleaning of patients rooms & unity TV room with a microwave. In this room I found old plates of salads sitting by microwave behind closed doors. The patient evaluation by Doctors, Nurses, & Social Workers is poor. They choose not to listen to patients family members about the care giving. My father was made to sit in a recliner by the nurses station as long as 24 hrs for days after he came back from the hospital after his electralities dropped and falling.Instead of trying to keep him comfortable in his bed. They also would not listen to us when asking he be put in a private room next to nurses station, instead keep him down the hall in a room with an unsuitable roommate. I have witnessed to many times when the call button would be activated by my dad or other person(who is mentally handicapped) and the nurses would take to long to check on them or would only call back to room. And all of this was still going on even after Truman lost there accreditation by the state. But thanks to the staffs poor judgement in sending my dad out to be evaluated and not being able to return because of Trumans status with the state, we were able to place my father in a better nursing home where he is happy and finally getting the physical therapy he has been needing after his hospital stay back in Nov. He has a more compatible roommate & is putting back on the weight he had lost at Truman Lakewood.

It's very unfortunate that many of these places provide substandard care. Part of the problem is the low pay the employees receive.

I am glad you were able to place your father in a better nursing home and he is doing better.

All the people in nursing homes are surely going to heaven because they're serving their time in hell now.
My family has instructions to let me die vs a nursing home.

jktshff1 - I've had patients REFUSE to be taken to the hospital, because they'll end up in a nursing home, or, not coming home at all.

Hey scouty, I sued Truman Medical center about 25 years ago and won! I hate that place!

If I get to the point where I can't take care of my self anymore I will either shoot me in the head or sneak off in to the woods. But I will NEVER go to a home!

Glad you dad is doing better.

I agree, TMC Lakewood's Nursing Home should be closed. The way they treat their patients is a crime.

I went to the Chief Nurse about my concerns when my son was mistreated in their Emergency Room, and she lied about everything. She even told her sectary to say she was not taking my calls because she was in a meeting. Funny, I called her from my cell phone, and watched her stand in the hallway joking with another women. I guess patient care is not that importain at Lakewood. As a nurse I was very upset by the lack of care and professionalism the whole nursing staff showed to my son, and my familiy.

I just wanted to say I work at Lakewood in the LTC Center. I have been at Lakewood since 07, I'm not sure what floor stuff happenend on, and I am very sorry. I just wanted to say not everyone at Truman Medical Center is like that, there are some good aides, nurses, and other staff. I'm sorry you had to get a few bad ones. I understand where your coming from though. My grandpa was in a nursing home once, and they didn't take good care of him, and we were furious, cause yeah they are your family, you want the best for them. I also wanted to add we have alot of new employees and they are wanting to make a big change at Truman for the better.
