Coastal Business Machines Inc. Complaint - Mosquito Magnet Repair Ripoff

Review by krowell on 2007-07-11
RANDALLSTOWN, MARYLAND -- 7/18/06 CBMI reconditioned my Liberty Mosquito Magnet for $115.00, $0.00 12 month warranty and $18.96 shipping. The unit did not work once we received it so I returned it to CBMI. They stated that the machine worked fine while at their shop so they sent it back to me and made me pay the shipping cost. Again, the unit did not work. I called CBMI and the owner Dan stated that the company that supplied the part to CBMI to repair the unit sent a faulty part so I had to take my complaint to them. I called that company and they stated that they did not supply the repair service so I would have to take it up with CBMI. I called CBMI back and talked to Dan again and stated that CBMI issued the warranty so it was their responsibility to refund my money. After several phone conversations with Dan over the next few weeks he agreed to refund me $40 (he stated that is what I paid for the warranty). I refused that refund because I paid $115.00 and the machine never worked, not even one week so it should not be prorated. I sent complaints to the BBB and still CBMI refused to stand by their written warranty.

Did it not turn on, or did it not keep mosquitos away?

It did not stay on. Also, when we bought the machine it only worked for about 1.5 years before we had to pay to have it reconditioned $115.00. While it worked it did lower the mosquito population around our house but did not eliminate it. Don't think it was worth $450.00 to work 1.5 years and then pay $115 to recondition and still not work. Would not buy another one. The main thing is that CBMI issued a 12 month warranty, then they clearly state that they are aware that the part they replaced was faulty but still would not refund my money.

I own 2 defender units. One worked for 1 summer, now just blinks. Like a dummy, they work so well controlling mosquitos WHEN THEY ARE WORKING, I bought another one, only to watch the light blinking next to the other one, after 1 tank of propane.
My boss is on his 4th one, and has given up. We've tryed all the solutiuons, different tanks, blowing them out with co2, etc etc. This is an extremely poorly designed product . Period. Search the net and all you will find is people trying to get them to work. Like one guy said, "if I spent as much time swatting mesquitos by hand as I have tring to get this thing to work, I would've killed more mesquitos than this has in a year..
