1 & 1 Internet Complaint - Service quality / Billing practice

Review by jims3cents on 2007-07-13
I had 1&1 for a while and their service was okay except that the account names were numeric and very difficult to deal with, so I went with a company that used "normal" account names....

I canceled my service with them, or so I thought. I transferred all of my domains and hosting, etc., away from them to another company, leaving them nothing to do. However, they billed me for an additional month after they had no services to provide. I found an entry on my credit record for $30. I talked to them, explained the situation and they remain steadfast in their position that I owe them $30, which they had sent to collection.

I am astounded that they insist I pay them for a month of non-service; that they don't stop billing when all of the services they were support have been removed; and that they didn't just write off $30 given the circumstances.

I highly recommend that nobody use 1&1 Internet because of their awkward system (your email account names are like 17328932832 instead of email address), their poor billing policies, and lousy customer service

I've used 1&1 in the past... they weren't that bad. I did end up canceling since I was not using the account, and they refunded (pro-rated) all my money no questions asked.

Just a little unclear... did you actually contact them and cancel the service, or did you just up and move all your files, expecting them to notice you weren't there any more?

I hope you paid the $30, as it is not worth ruining your credit over.

Yeah, DarkProwler, exactly what I was wondering. You can't just transfer files to another service and expect they will cancel your account because you aren't using it anymore. They will expect you to use it if you didn't cancel, therefore, that explains the charge.

I did contact them - informing them that I was moving all of my domains to another provider. I never had any files per se on their servers, just email support. The account I had for domain hosting and email, after transferring everything. I spoke with their accounts people and they basically said that just because they were not providing any services was no reason not to bill for them. I replied that they should have dropped the account when everything that was a billable line item (the domains) were removed.

As for just paying the $30, I might, however, my credit is pretty good as is and I have found that things like this are easily explained and dismissed by lenders.
