SunCom Informative - SunCom rips people off - Cell phone service

Cell phone service
Review by Diana in Asheville on 2007-07-21
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA -- SunCom just doesn't work in Asheville, NC. You have to be outside right on a main road to get any service and even then it cuts out on you. We tried - we really tried - to make SunCom work for us. But when you can't actually talk to anyone on the phone, there just isn't much you can do.

What's worse, is that everyone in town knows that only US Cellular and Verizon actually work well in Asheville. So SunCom is selling a product it knows to be defective. We just moved here so didn't know better.

We canceled our service after 3 or 4 days, but they refused to remove the activation fee from our bill. Why should we pay $45 for a product that doesn't work?

The "Customer Care" people at the 800 number told us we had to go to the store to get a refund. The store said they aren't even technologically capable of giving refunds and we had to call the Customer Care number. So we called them right from the store so they couldn't give us that BS again, and after being treated very rudely by SunCom and being told repeatedly that they have a strict policy of never refunding money under any circumstances, we finally just hung up the phone and tore up the bill.

Pay the $45 and call it a lesson learned.

Take PG's advice. Otherwise it'll come back and bite your butt as far as your credit report is concerned. Rotten? Yes. But if they have any (legal) way of weasling out of it, they will.

My wife&son both have suncom, both have problems if you talk 5 minutes expect your call to drop.I do not have a cell phone but if I did you can bet it would not be with suncom.we live near kinston,N.C but the dropped calls happen everywhere,a lot of areas you get poor signals.the upside unlimited phone calls.

*sigh* Yes, I'm going to pay it. If it was just the 50 bucks, I'd tell them to stick it, but they're going to charge me $5 / month in late fees from now until the end of time if I don't pay up, so I guess I just have to suck it up. I hope, at least, people learn from user reviews like this one.

Diana, I live in Leicester and I also use only US Cellular. Even Verizon wouldn't work out here unless I go 3 miles towards Asheville. Suncom sucks and what they did to you is not uncommon for them, I here this same story allot.

But I guess you got to weight all the variables and $45 bucks just isn't worth it. I don't know how they stay in business around here?

PS. Where did ya’ll move from? And welcome the rest of the place is really pretty nice and so are the people.

Thanks Lidman. I think they stay in business because of uninformed consumers who are new to town or new to cell phones. We moved here from Seattle, which is a big enough city that pretty much all the cell services work well enough. We didn't think about the fact that in a small city in the mountains, cell reception could be an issue. Seems obvious now.

My husband and I have commented many times that this SunCom debacle has been the one and only dark spot on our experience in Asheville. The city is beautiful, has so much to offer, and the kindness and generosity of the people here is unparalleled. Now that we have decent coverage with US Cellular, it's downright perfect living here.

That's great! I moved back from CA and I wouldn't trade it for the world! I use to come up here from Wilmington down on the coast but I never thought I would end up here. Been here since 2003 and it's been great!
