Elephant Bar Restaurants Complaint - False Menu Advertising

Review by Anonymous on 2002-10-06
I recently went to a restaurant, Elephant Bar, in San Jose. They offer a dish called Chicken and Lobster Jambalaya. When I received it, it contained Langostino, not lobster. When I contacted their corporate headquarters, Gordon Guy advised me that since its "common name" is the "Squat Lobster," calling it Lobster was fine. The FDA's own market name is actually "Langostino."

I have been relentlessly pursuing this, clearly stating my belief that this is false advertising. I have had several exchanges of email and telephone calls. Their VP of Food and Beverages Reinhard Dorfhuber claims to have contacted to the FDA for clarification, and he advised me that the FDA apparently supports my contention. Mr. Dorfhuber claims they are going to change their menu- in February 2003. That means they get another 5 months of this apparently misleading advertising.

You spent a lot more time working on this then I would. It seems you single handily got somewhere though with your efforts. I would say that is a victory and would be happy you got their attention enough to review their polocy. Feel Good!
