Advance Auto Parts Complaint - Customer Full Disclosure -NOT!!!!!! - Halogen Bulbs

Halogen Bulbs - Complaint
Review by gcurrie on 2007-08-12
BURLINGTON, NORTH DAKOTA -- I recently purchased 2 Halogen Head lamps from Advance Auto Parts, the sales person was polite and asked if I needed two or one. I stated that I should probably get two because I was not sure if both Highbeams were out or not and told him if it doesn't work I will just return them.

After getting home and determining the bulb(s) were not the cause, I tried to return the bulbs 1.5 hours later. I was then told that because I had touched the bulbs I could not return them and that they were no good anymore. I am now trying to understand how I am supposed to put a bulb in my car without touching it and if that is the case, why was I not told this at the point of sale and where does it say this on the bulb package. In my opinion this is not any way to treat customers. I will be calling the Regional President and will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER and did I say NEVER shop at ADVANCE AUTO PARTS again.

It is my mission to deter everyone that I know from ever shopping at this store.

the bulbs you bought will blow if you touch them with bare hands because of the oil that is on your hands(the so called salesman who sold you the bulbs should have told you this, but the DUH! guy's they hire are dumb, low payed people how do you think they build a new store every other week,on the backs of there most important asset(a dummy employee)if you buy those bulbs from now on either use thin rubber gloves or use tissue and wipe them with alcohol.

Every halogen bulb I have ever bought says right on the package "do not touch the bulb with bare hands". Check the package carefully - it there's no warning then when you hear from the regional office you have a pretty good argument. Good luck.

When you purchase an auto part to install yourself, you are implying to the counter person that you know what your doing. right? Or, did you say, "I know nothing about this, heck, I don't even know if both high beams are out or not". Most if not all electrical parts are non returnable, anywhere. And when heather-c mentioned oil on your hands, it's body oil, not motor oil (just clarifying a point).

I think you have failed in your mission. Don't looks like you convinced anyone here.

Eve3ry package of halogen lights I have seen has the warning in rather large print, along with instructions for handling the bulbs. Basicall, hold hte plastic then peel it off teh backing cardboard, all the while holding the bulb in the plastic. Insert the bulb in the reflector assembly, then peel the plastic off the bulb. Do not touch the bulb with bare hands, as body oil on your hands will cause the bulb to fail. firengine is correct, bulbs are electrical, and electrical components are non-returnable.

Sorry about the double, but I was informed my response could not be edited.

Thank you all for your estute knowledge regarding Halogen Bulbs, maybe you should go and work for this company, because it is obvious some of their sales reps dont have a clue, here is my point. The regional manager returned my call and after hearing my story was in complete 100% agreement. She then called the district manager and he called me and allowed me to return the bulbs for a FULL REFUND. They also apologized for not letting me know the T&C's of electronic parts specifically regarding Halogen Bulbs, because as I stated there is not a sign anywhere nor does the receipt state that this is their policy. If indeed it is they need to do a better job of letting their customers know. Also there was no stickers or big bold print letters or even tiny small print documentation on the package of the bulbs I purchased either, whether you beleive it or not. So please excuse my ignorance regarding Halogen Bulbology, my highschool and college that I attended did not offer that course........P.S. Costco sells bulbs and if they dont work they have no problem with you returning them, what a novel idea!!

regards,

What you should have done is diagnose the problem before trying the part out. This is your own fault. Its not buy and try. You should have kept the headlights either way as you know they would eventually go out again. No one will purchase a package that as been opened then stapled or taped back shut, so you just expect the store to take a loss because of your own mistakes? Diagnose your vehicles problems before you start trying things out.

I am a bit stunned at all the haters here . . . or are they all AAP employees? Hmmm. AAP has accepted wrongly purchased and even open package bulbs on several occasions over the years so clearly they do not consider bulbs to be non-returnable and as for the bulbs now being bad . . that's riduculous. The warning on the package doesnt say if you touch them you cannot return them, it is there to warn you that the oils on your hands can cause the bulb to overheat and fail (fire highly unlikely) . . . the bulbs could have been cleaned and returned. Should have just cleaned them then returned to a different store . . . or next time buy them at Walmart. You will save money and if you need to return them they are fully refundable with no questions asked!

I love the way when someone is given good information here, they call everyone haters, and make the totally ridiculous statement that we must all work for company X. No place I know accepts electrical items back, and I have been buying and using car parts for approximately 50 years. I learned years ago that you shaould always replaces anything that is in pairs both at the same time. That means headlights, taillights, wipers, etc. I got news for ya, WalMart won't accept electrical items back either.
