Not entirely off point of this post, but I've read information on people going into the stores, picking up an un-activated gift card, jotting down the number on the back of the card, waiting until card is activated (by checking online with the number) and draining the funds. Buyer beware!
Hey, when it comes to gift giving....cash is king!!

Do you have the receipt showing it was activated?

AlleyS is right, the place where you bought it from can't help you. You need your receipt to see if it was activated or not. If it wasn't activated, then yes, that was the fault of the store. However, if it wasn't activated, it either failed to activate or wasn't scanned to begin with. Our registers don't allow us to just accidently forget.

They can't refund it.,, you have to call the 1-800 number and go through whichever company (Visa/Mastercard). All they do is sell the damn things.

The card is a product of Visa that is simply sold through other retailers, it is not refundable unless it failed to activate, which the cashier would know immediately, you must obtain either a replacement or refund to Visa

Yep. Everyone above is correct. Recently we had a mad rush for these cards because some hip-hop station was telling everyone they could get 70 dollars worth of gas with a $40 dollar Visa gift card. So all these retards rushed our store trying to buy these cards and then coming back a few hours later in a huff as if their gullibility was somehow our job to rectify.
We simply removed them from the shelf rather than explain over and over ad nauseum that 1) we don't refund gift cards and b) you can't get something for nothing.

It's not just CVS that can't help you but every retail store will have the same problem. If the card doesn't work than you call the company which the card was produced from ie American Express or Visa.
Retail store have no say when it comes to refunded gift cards

From what I have gathered over the past 2 years, we have absolutely nothing to do with Gift Credit Cards. They are a loss leader, something we carry, yet make no profit from. It is simply a convenience for the customer who is purchasing it. We have no control over the outcome of the card, we simply activate it, if after it’s activated there is a problem, it’s out of our jurisdiction. If when we go to activate it, and it doesn’t work, then we can help you, otherwise you must take it up with Visa, Amex, or whoever. As for a refund, we can’t just give a refund, for all we know; you could have used the card up and are now coming back for another fully loaded card for nothing. Even if you are the nicest person who spends more than most people and have been in and out of the store 5 out of 7 days in the week, a refund can’t be done, same goes for phone cards and retail gift cards.

the reason they cant take it back is because they have no way of knowing if you have spent it

Did you buy this as a gift for someone else? If so, how do you know they did not spend it and tell you it was not good. If you bought it for yourself, why did you buy a visa giftcard for yourself?
