T-Mobile Complaint - Advertising
RHODE ISLAND -- I am concerned about T-Mobil's new ad for young people's cell phone service. Young teens have a hard enough time without advertising which perpetuates a culture of cruelty in school. Referring to a young woman as a "horse" encourages harassment, sexism, and prejudice based on appearance. Calling another child "chicken" is not any better. It is not a joke. That the perpetrator is made to look obnoxious and ridiculous is not a deterrent - many young teens will happily identify with him! Haven't we learned from Columbine of the dangers of allowing this kind of cruelty?
Some schools now have programs to teach tolerance and empathy- why can't we model empathy in our ads as well?
