PayPal Credit Card and Citi Card Complaint - Identity Theft

Review by N. on 2007-08-22
I'm the victim of identity thief. I didn't know that last year, my PayPal Card had been compromised - it was used somewhere other than eBay, that I'm not familiar with and I wouldn't have known if I hadn't received a credit card statement for a PayPay statement that I had paid months ago, for a credit card that I don't have, and there are charges I didn't make. For two weeks, I've spoken to various rude people and no one knew anything. I was told that I had a new Citi card on my PayPal account that had replaced the PayPal card and I didn't know anything about this, either. Citi card is now charging me for not paying a credit card bill that isn't mine. I've notified my bank and tomorrow I will contact the three credit reporting agencies about this and ask for fraud alerts to be placed on my credit reports. My bank said to dispute the charge. Because of this, I took out credit card insurance through my bank. This isn't solving the problems.

How do you get anyone to understand?

Make sure everything you do over the phone is followed up in writing. File signed fraud affidavits where necessary and you may have to call the merchants on the bills to report the fraud to them (particularly if the charges are monthly recurrent).

It is going to take a long time to straighten out the mess, so be patient and persistant.

If you suspected ID theft, gather all your evidences and report it to your local law enforcement agency.

It is a crime.

If you do not use your PayPal account close it. PayPal and eBay are a nightmare to try and deal with.
