HLS Informative - How to report scams

Review by 23169 on 2007-08-29
I get really tired of these email scams and now they are trying to use the US Military. These I usually just click “report Spam” and leave it at that but this really makes me mad. So I try to report it to the Government, FBI, Home Land Security and the News but it’s more like pulling your own wisdom teeth with a rope.

If you get these kinds of emails don’t delete them report them we have enough problems with out these people trying to use our own military to rip us off.

I finally sent this to a few news stations, most want money and the local PD. I know nothing will happen because it would require work to back track this but maybe if its put out enough some poor smuk won’t give these people money, that’s the hope anyway.

Thanks and feel free to pass it on to anyone or even the FBI if you can get through the endless crap they want before you can report anything.

Lid's, I run my own email server and catch 90% of this crap at the server. All spam is then forwarded to spam@uce.gov. Criminal spam like the above is also sent to Postini and the FBI.

The junk that sneaks by, the PDF attachments etc. I catch in my Outlook spam folder using McAfee and forward it from my PC. It's not much but it's about all I can do until our government in Washington get off their lazy good for nothing a$$'S and putt's some teeth into an anti spam law.

Spam costs American business Billion$ every year and what is lost to the criminals is even more. But no one in Washington gives a cr^p about it.

Good post Lidman as usual. This is fraud and it's a shame our government doesn't do more about it. I guess if the EMAIL was asking for funds to sponsor a dog fight the media and gov would be all over it.. Thanks Liddy for sharing. I voted your contribution 'Very Helpful' and also thanks for being a concerned good American not afraid to take an action!

Thanks Lidman, for the informative article on the spam epidemic. Spam is here to stay and is not going away. Be a smart computer user as spam is with us forever, unfortunately.

Stew, you are so right and I rewarded you.

MRM, you are right too.

Thanks for the input guys and I rewarded all.

I use a service called spamcop.net. It allows me to forward all spam to them, and they automatically generate complaints to the mail servers that handled the spam mail, as well as the host of any web site referenced in the mail. Additionally, I configured my account to report to spam@uce.gov and abuse@comcast.net (my own provider)
It gives me huge satisfaction to see the web sites disappear minutes after I submit the spam mail.

If you sent to Postini and/or Messagelabs, they can better their spam heuristic engines.

We worked with both email scanning services and Messagelabs have better spam detection rate.

Be aware that they are both offsite scanning services that require monthly fee.

The best enterprise app. product out there is Brightmail. This product uses spam honeypot for spam database. You will get less false-positive mistakes with this product.

If you are looking for a spam appliance, then you should look at the Ironport products.

You can send spam to Postini without paying a fee. spam@postini.com, it really does help to forward spam to these companies so they can get better statistics and fine tune the thousands of mail filters that subscribe to them.

Anti-Spam law is hard to enforce. Most of these spammers use off-shore servers in Asia, Eastern Europe, etc. There are no Anti-Spam law and enforcement in those countries.

Anti-Spam is not a US problem but a global problem. It will require a global solution.

I think spammers should be included in George Bush's war of terror. I say set a few hundred spammers on fire then put the video on youtube then you might see a slow down in the spamming bizness or not... but wouldn't it be grand seeing spammers burn --- FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!

spamcop.net gives too many false positives.
You may want to switch to the following DNSRBL list.

combined.njabl.org
dnsbl.sorbs.net
list.dsbl.org
zen.spamhaus.org

One last item to note. About 70% of the spam sent has it's roots in the good ole' USA. Sure 90% of it comes from over seas but that is because the crooks and jerks use over seas mail servers to stay out of trouble. If you trace 9 out of 10 spams it will end up right on the door step of a USA address. All the pill's, stock scams etc all have their roots right here sorry to say.

Excellent topic Lid, and great suggestions from all. I personally have never received any emails of this type, but receive the faxes quite often at the office and in the past have received some in the mail. This particular one I had never seen before. With the military theme there might very well be those who would fall for this one. There are still too many unaware of these scams. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks, Nohandle , emt and everybody for your input!
