Mary.com Complaint - Invasion of Privacy - Personality test, online dating

Review by disappointeduser on 2007-08-31
CALIFORNIA -- I was lured to mary.com by a "free personality test". I am Internet savvy and I know they want at least my email before giving up anything for free. After spending some time on the test, in order to get the detailed test results, they ask you to join the site which is basically a second rate dating site which I have no problems with except for the fact they make your personal information such as age, martial status and location available to the entire world. I googled my name for another reason and found this out! There was my full name, city I live in, my age and marital status, and more if you click on the link - even though I had requested "hide my profile" option where other mary.com members cannot view me BUT the rest of the world with Internet access can!!! I immediately canceled my membership which was not easy to do. It has been over a week and although I cannot log in to mary.com, all my personal info is still available online coming up by a quick name search!!

This is outrageous and complete invasion of privacy - if I join a website for any reason, I understand other site members will have some access to me but why the entire WWW??? I have requested Mary.com to remove this info but without any response so far. I cannot find a phone number for them, the only way to contact seems to be an email through their site. Any suggestions as to how I can remove my personal info from the Internet through their website would be greatly appreciated.

And if you're thinking about joining this site or taking their test, please save your time and effort, there are many professional sites out there that do not abuse your personal profile data but making it available to the world. Their test was a huge waste of time and their site is worthless.
Thank you!

Sorry to burst your bubble on this but the ability to 'Google' a name has been around for some time already. Even entering your phone number can and usually will display your name and address. The exceptions are unlisted numbers and mobile numbers.

Not “Internet savvy”….

Never post anything online unless you know exactly what they are going to do with the info.

I have joined many similar websites, dating/social/networking etc but they all ask if I want my profile private as only shared with other members or the entire world. I have never had a problem choosing private and keeping my personal info within the community I joined. None of my other memberships come up when I google my name, only mary.com - it would be fine if it just came up indicating I am a member but it goes as far as listing my personal profile info. Canceling your membership is another HUGE hassle and their customer care went as far as saying "this is a free country unlike the one I'm from" - "Internet savvy" or not, I think this is completely out of line, unprofessional and unacceptable and most importantly, people should know what they're getting into when joining mary.com as I'm sure there are more none "Internet savvy" folks in this world than there are "Internet savvy".
I realize the ability to 'google' a name has been around for some time but what comes up, we have some control on. I have made sure my phone number and/or name searches don't lead to my personal address, etc by taking the time to remove the data from necessary sites and it worked!

Thanks for your feedback.
