AirTran Airways Complaint - Airtran Pricing and Greed
TAMPA, FLORIDA -- I scheduled two seats from Tampa to San Francisco, on AirTran, to attend a wedding. They were the lowest priced carrier. After confirming the flight, which was two months away, I went to the seat assignment page and discovered I would have to pay five dollars each to reserve a seat. That brought the ticket price to the same as one or two of the other carriers. That is deception. Fool me once . . .! Then my family dog was diagnosed with cancer and I had to cancel my trip because he was to be in the middle of ChemoTherapy, or dying, at that time. When I cancelled I was charged sixty dollars for each ticket. one hundred twenty total and I could only put the remaining money against a future flight. The future flight could only be taken by the same individuals so I could not give the credits to others who could use the tickets. The credit has to be used within one year. I am retired and on a fixed income and would prefer the ability to use the money myself rather than fill the coffers of greedy airline. I contacted AirTran Customer Service and was told that AirTran is a cheap airline and does not offer any kind of bereavement or emergency plan. Therefore the one hunfred twenty dollar penalty still applies and the ten dollar seat assignment fee would not be waived.
I then e-mailed customer service and reached a person who at least credited my account with sixty dollars (one penalty), but all else holds. I was told that is why the trip insurance is advertised on their web site. I didn't even consider the insurance since I planned to go, and it was only two months away. Let me summarize Airtans Customer Service: Schedule a trip, pay for a seat assignment, have personal problems and lose Seventy Five dollars (current penalty) per ticket plus five dollars, per ticket, have a credit put in the ticket holder's name only and be allowed one year to use it or lose it! Also, you could spend additional money to purchase trip insurance, but it is not clear if that just causes AirTran to waive the seventy five dollars or if it includes the five dollar seat charge as well.
I am not sure if they keep your money and require you to use it within one year or if they refund the charge completely. To me this entire fiasco tells me AirTran is greedy and if they keep it up they will "crash and burn" again as they did in the Everglades several years ago. Even they they chose to change their name so customers would not relate them with the airline that mis-handled cargo and killed people as a result!
