Papa John's Pizza Complaint - Unresponsible and rude management - In store management

In store management - Complaint
Review by 4justice on 2007-09-16
FREDERICK, MARYLAND -- Ordered one of their famous pizzas on line only to arrive at the store and was advised by the counter person that I would have to wait another 35 to 40 minutes because the one person in the store was fulfilling an order for 200 pizzas that was received the day before.

Needless to say an argument ensued and the store manager was requested and was advised that there was no store manager. A number for a district manager was requested and the employee refused to give out the number.

How the heck do you run a business without having an on site manager or responsible person to field complaints or more important on site EMERGENCIES. Regardless the local police department was called in by the customer to obtain the district managers number for the customer.

After explaining to the responding officer what was going on the officer entered the store to obtain management information for the customer. After speaking with the employee the officer advised that the employee refused to give him the information for management contacts.

Police officer advised customer that he would strongly advise contacting a district manager or Papa Johns Corporate to file a complaint. Officer also was amazed that there was no on site manager or responsible person to even contact in an emergency ie Fire or other emergency that needed attention ASAP.

Papa John's needs to get their act together and and have responsible managers on site and emergency contact numbers for the customers and police and fire department.

This post sort of confused me who called the cops you or another customer?.
Posted by chris513 on 2007-09-17:
you called the cops because you had to wait too long for your pizza? i must say, i like your style.
Posted by groveman55 on 2007-09-17:
I am sure the police have better things to do than answer pizza calls.

Grow up and get a life.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2007-09-17:
This is another instance of needing to deal direct. The on-line order forms don't know how busy a particular restaurant may be. A simple phone call(with probably a busy signal or no answer) would have tipped off the op that it was going to be a long time wait.
That is still no excuse for the employee not having contact info.

You called the police over pizza? What a complete waste of a public servant's time. Couldn't you have gone home, got on your computer and contacted the corporate office?
Posted by MRM on 2007-09-17:
People are dying out there on the streets of Baltimore (see location) and you're wasting the officer's time over a pizza. Unbelievable complaint indeed.

Think of all the donut shops the officer could been too!

You called the police over a PIZZA? Are you for real?!?! Grow up, be a man, leave and find another pizza place! Don't waste the cops time!!

Extreme measures for a pizza? Poor police officer!
Posted by squeekie on 2007-09-17:
I think that is a little extreme. Granted the employee should have contacted a manager. BUT did you really expect the kis to give you the information to contact the manager? I would never, ever (EVER) give out personal information on any co worker boss, employee. the kid was right not to give it out. Harrassing someone at their home over a pizza?
Write corporate, get some coupons for a free pizza or something. Besides those places are franchized. you need to hunt down the owner if you really want anything done. Geeze.

Poor officer indeed! I did worse though. my hubby was away on buissiness and in the middle of the night my daughter got up to use the bathroom and discovered a bat in the house. I had a newborn in the house, and kinda freaked, had every light on in the house, animal control was closed so I called the police, 3 cruisers showed up to catch my bat. LOL, they were cool though. told me to call no matter what, (knowing I was alone) . I laugh at it now, so whats worse calling over a pizza or a bat?
Posted by mjholly on 2007-09-17:
I undertsand your anger for your long wait but why cal the police on them> Police respond to serious crimes, not long pizza waits.
Posted by Slimjim on 2007-09-17:
I don't know what's worse, this complaint or the fact two people voted this helpful. What would have been helpful is if the cops whacked you upside the head with their batons for wasting their time.
Posted by Skye on 2007-09-17:
If there was a fire, or some type of other serious emergency, you would be calling the fire department or 911, not a manager. Big deal, no manager on site, not a life threatening crisis.

I have to agree, what a waste of time for the police to have been called. Who called them?? Where you getting all aggressive and yelling??, were they ready to punch you out??

I feel sorry for the ONE person having to make all those pizzas.

Save the police for serious crimes! DUH!!!

The bat is definately a better reason to call!!!

ok I've been there and done that on the 200 pizzas due and yes they get 1st dibs because they ordered the day before. I don't agree with you being upset to wait for that. Lets say for i.e. that the 200 pizzas was for a hospital that ordered pizza for the entire crew. Your boss called the day before and placed the order. For one thing as the manager of a Papa Johns I would have ensured the store was amply staffed to ensure the order got there on time. And yes that many pizzas even with enough crew I would tell current customers upfront my situation and give them the option to wait or order somewhere else because of the long wait.
Ok the manager cannot be reached and he couldn't give there personal info, think about that would you give your personal info to someone on the phone just to hear a compliant, 1st they are "off the clock" so they are not responsible, if they were the owner/operator thats different, but idk about you but I sure don't want to have random customers call me at HOME to complain when thats my personal family time.
Next call the cops get real I could understand if there was a crime or fire at the scene but just to get a hold of a manager "off the clock" get real, that cop could have been doing something important like saving someone else's life. Not doing a pizza compliant. Instead of going "soap opera" (drama) on this you should have said no thank you and ordered somewhere else and saved the Papa John's and cops there time.

Agree with Slim on this one.

Reply to 10retail from 4justice : Unless you were there and witnessed what actually took place your reply is actually moot, null, and void.
As for the police could have been helping a person(s) with a more serious problem I don't know how the calls are handled where you live but ALL calls here are prioritized or triaged where the most serious or ASAP calls are handled first.
The police department here dose an excellent job of handeling the most serious along with the most mundane routine calls like parking complaints.
Fortunately the call that I made to the police IS COVERED in their JOB DESCRIPTION.
Dose this make sense to you so far ?
The only reason I was upset was all Papa Johns employee should have done or could have done was to TURN OFF the on line ordering feature which was not done. Duh!
This way people would have to call in their order and could have made an informed decision instead of wasting gas and time to find this information out.
This way a new order could have been called in at a different location.
Also I wasn't by my self there were many other customers who found out the hard way.
Papa Johns is the only retail establishment that I have EVER delt with that dose not have a responsible person (manager) on site to smoothe over customers ruffled feathers
or to handle on site emergencies.
Dose any of this make sense yet ?
Recently a fast food chain screwed up a large order I palced I returned to the returante with the receipt and spoke with the manager.
To make up for the screw up the manager was very sympathetic and issued several complimentay certificates.
This is the way it is supposed to be done. It's good for the business and the customer. A win win situation.
Also how the employee handles each individual situation(complaint) dictates how far the customer has to go to resolve the problem.
In this incident it became a matter of principal.
Oh, I might mention that the large order that was screwed up was for the FIREFIGHTERS who returned from a serious fire.
You need to wake up and realize this is the real world
2007. Go Figure!
Also because the 200 pizza order was called in one day ahead
of time you would think that other Papa Johns locations in
the area could have been notified to help fill a large order
someone certainly was not using their head (brains or gray
matter.

It's in the officer's job description to answer calls about pizzas taking too long?
Posted by Slimjim on 2007-09-17:
"Fortunately the call that I made to the police IS COVERED in their JOB DESCRIPTION.

Not to me. Since when is it the job of law enforcement to get you a pizza shack's manager's home phone, which you shouldn't get anyway, all because your wait was longer than anticipated. Get real, and BTW, it's spelled d_o_e_s.

4.. well which fast food place did good?
This site is for compliments as well as complaints.
Posted by bmwrules on 2007-09-18:
Brenda is the one that expects 5 star dining out of fast food restaurants. Pretty ironic for her to be getting on you as she can barely get through the door of Jack In the Box each day! Brenda can tell you the best and worst fast food places as she goes to all of them regularily.

is it okay to call the police if theres a bat in the pizza joint?
Posted by squeekie on 2007-09-18:
I need to add to my comments that these places are usually individually owned and operated. so needless to say there is not always going to be a manager on site. and if an employee gave out a number to anyone they could be fired. I know I would fire someone who gave out my personal info to a customer.
my daughter works at a papa johns. I can't wait to show this to her manager. it aught to be good for a laugh

"Regardless the local police department was called in by the customer to obtain the district managers number for the customer. "
Is the OP talking about himself? This review is horrible. Maybe he should have understood that there was a big order, and either waited or left. Then, he could have gone home and called the store the next day or gone to the website. Calling the cops because you had to wait, along with everyone else (which I'm sure weren't as impatient as you), for your pizza is outrageous. Next time, when they tell you it's going to be a 40 minute wait, go somewhere else and order.

4justice: I was just stating what I would have done if I was the manager of the Papa Johns. Yes it is in there job description, so is following me to the bank. I used to call the police every night to follow me to the bank with my night deposit for my safety. No I did not know the entire situation because you did not tell the entire story. I was close I said the pizza were for a hospital and they were for firefighters thats pretty good. But seriously no one and I mean no one should be bothered about any business "off the clock" unless they are the owner/operator. Now thats selfishness if you think that your situation required the personal time of someone. And also the online system cannot be turned off its controlled by the corporate office in the area. And FYI I was agreeing with you that the manager should have been on site but disagreeing with you calling him/her at home.
Posted by 10retail on 2007-09-19:
And btw just because I worked at Papa John's does not mean I'm dumb like you implied DUH!!! Does that make sense to you..
Posted by bmwrules on 2007-09-19:
Brenda, you never have anything interesting to say do you? You just insult people and act like you are better than other people because you are so insecure. It's okay though. Poor Brenda.
Posted by squeekie on 2007-09-20:
10retail, my daughter works at papa johns, her manager got a kick out of this.
and working at papa's doesn't make you dumb. It takes alot to deal with a customer thats got his panties in a bunch like this one.The guy had a choice and he just choose to get nasty rather than say okay'Ill be back or order someplace else.

For 4justice :
Patience (Pa"tience) (?), n.[F. patience, fr. L. patientia. See Patient.]1. The state or quality of being patient; the power of suffering with fortitude; uncomplaining endurance of evils or wrongs, as toil, pain, poverty, insult, oppression, calamity, etc. "Strenthened with all might, . . . unto all patience and long-suffering." The Stoic may have patience; the Christian should have both patience and resignation.

great post lidman.
I can totally understand a customers frustration, but don't take it out on the poor guy behind the counter, he's there alone fullfilling an order of 200 pizzas.yes he should have had help, not his fault. The kid was right not to give out personal information, should he have called the manager himself? Yes. but bet your butt he'd have been fired if he gave out the info to a customer.

Thanks squeekie!
Yours is a great follow up as well, we make a team...
Posted by squeekie on 2007-09-20:
welcome lidman, yep we make a team :0) most people don't know what its like to deal with the public and treat customer service people like verbal punching bags. Now that my daughter is working I told her not to get into it with a customer. smile sweetly and ask, "may I get you a manager" even if there isn't one on hand there is usually someone else in the store. Gosh sometimes you never know what a customer will do.
Posted by 10retail on 2007-09-20:
yes I agree with squeekie and lidman thanks for backing me up!
Posted by squeekie on 2007-09-20:
10retail. I give alot of credit to people who do customer service. It is hard to deal with people sometimes on an everyday basis, but when you have some person in your face screamiing at you and or calling you names there is a limit.
Posted by Jezb9 on 2007-09-26:
I can promise you that the manager that was supposed to be there ... and there should always be a shift manager on the premises ... was fired. I can also tell you for certain that poor employee was there making 200 pizzas because his shift manager probably ran off to do whatever he generally does. However, never is an employee supposed to deny a customer the number for his DO (Director of Operations) or his GM (General Manager). He was probably fired for this, especially if this was a corporate store.

So ... called the cops? I've called the cops over a pizza before - I was delivering a pizza and the pizza was taken from me and the customer gave me a check (despite the fact that she was told previously by ME that we did not except checks). She refused to give me the pizza back and I could just let her have it nor could I bust down her door. So ... PD to the rescue.

You had to wait an additional 30 minutes ... and possibly two to three people lost their jobs and some cop was called off their beat. Granted, the manager deserves to be fired, but the instore doesn't, but most likely will for covering.

HAHAHAHAHAHA..................HAHAHAHAHA.

That is arguably the MOST ridiculous thing I have EVER heard, and believe me when I tell you you are competing with many other retards. Emergency?!?!?!?!?!?! Waiting too long for your pizza is a life and death emergency? The guy had 200 pizzas to make, be patient. How fast can you make 200 pizzas? Don't answer that, it was rhetorical.
Posted by DPW123 on 2007-10-09:
Jezb9, perhaps the person at the front counter was an AM (Assistant Manager), and since the guy said there was not currently a GM, they were obviously GMless. And actually an employee CAN deny the customer the PERSONAL phone number of the CRM (Corporate Regional Manager) if he chooses not to allow his phone number to be made public (some will post their phone numbers in the store lobby, thus indicating they don't mind their personal number being publicly displayed). You can NOT rightfully deny the customer the Corporate Office number (which in this case was the only way the customer could contact the CRM). Now, note that I'm not arguing that the employee shouldn't have given out the Corporate Office phone number, as the customer asked for "A number to reach a District Manager", and not "The number".

DPW123, I take a great deal of offense to your calling people "retards". I have a retarded nephew and work with many challenged people thru charity work. They are not that way by choice but try their best to make the best of it. Your extremely offensive and if you want to post around here need to grow up learn some common sense and manners.

What do you do if you get a flat tire? Have the FBI go talk to the guys at Good Year? Honestly, if you are involving the police in your ridiculous toddleresque tantrums then perhaps you should just go rent a padded room since the real world is entirely too stressful for you.
