Stop N Shop Complaint - Charged for Stop N Shop's Error

Review by sarahnkrystal on 2007-10-01
MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT -- We went into our local Stop N Shop to purchase a money order to pay for our son's daycare, $95. We purchase them at Stop N Shop because the school (Head Start) only accepts bank checks or money orders, and Stop N Shop is cheaper than the bank.

My husband went to pay for the money order, and today he did not have the cash on him, so he gave he cashier at the service desk his debit card, which she swiped through and then proceeded to inform us that you can't purchase money orders with a debit/credit card. She was also unable to figure out how to refund it into our account, but eventually did.

My husband ran over to the ATM located right near the service desk and withdrew the money and purchased the money order.

The problem is the money still hasn't been put back in the checking account, and we only have $13 in the bank now. I know when you normally return things onto a credit card it takes a few days for the credit to go through, but I also know that if you void a same day transaction out, it shouldn't go through.

I am now doubting whether my money even got credited back to the card.
I don't want anything from Stop N Shop, no freebies, no coupons. I just want them to know, that the people at the service desk should be the best of your best employees.

Wait a second. You have a debit card and no paper checks? Are you referring to certified checks? You may want to check out “M&T Select Checking”. They offer free certified check with this checking service.

You are right Sarah. That credit transaction should have followed the debit immediately. Did they give you the tape receipt for the credit?

You can get free bank drafts (checks) at Washington Mutual when you have an account. I would definitely call the banks in your area to see if they offer this service to avoid problems in the future. Hope your problem with is resolved soon.

HappyJoyBear, for some unknown reason, my son's school takes neither cash nor personal checks, only money orders or bank checks.

Thanks everyone. I voted you all very helpful!
