America Online Complaint - Aol Chat Rooms - Aol Chat Rooms

Complaint
Review by Ann Frank on 2007-10-04
I often visit AOL chat rooms when a topic captures my interest. I have found that AOL hosts are opinionated and biased to that opinion. One such topic of conversation was the NFL football star, Michael Vick and the Dogs. The host allowed racial slurs and somehow deemed me "Ann Frank." I did not take this as an insult and continued to exchange points of view, but things I did find objectionable were:

1.) some of my comments were not allowed to be viewed 2.) racial slurs were allowed to be viewed

AOL often allows debates in chat rooms on the incumbent, President Bush, knowing that many American's are dissatisfied with this man's actions or inactions. These chats quickly become shouting matches: the Democrats against the Republicans. It's an ugly sight. The racial slurs and hatred is so thick it can be felt to the bone.

BUT MY GREATEST CONCERN IS MY CHECKING ACCOUNT

2.) my pricing plan changed from $9.95 unlimited access for dial-up connection monthly to $109.95 per month. I was charged this price in June, July, August, and September

3.) Also, I was charged for fast access $34.00 in May plus the $9.95 per month

4.) previously, I had to change my screen name because I was not allowed access to any of the top news, it was restricted to me. There was no one I could contact to correct it, believe me I tried!

5.) Just recently I visited a site about unions and my footprints were cleared from my computer. No one at my home has access to my computer.

These type of actions cause me to wonder...What is becoming of America, freedom of speech, and privacy?

This comment is to FedUpAndPissed
Your response to my concerns is exactly the type of comment one might expect to create an ambiance of hatred in an AOL chat room. May I ask exactly what are you Fed Up with and Pissed about?
Posted by Ann Frank on 2007-10-04:
Maybe you should open your mind and close you mouth. There are things that go on in this world that, even though you find them inconceivable, are not. Why are you so hasty with your judgement? Do you host an AOL chat room?

"Maybe you should open your mind and close you mouth"

What about HIS Freedom of Speech?
Posted by Sparticus on 2007-10-04:
Can't we all just be friends... ;-)

I find my way around a few other sites/communities online... and I can say from my experience the the world is generally a decent place... but online the creeps seem to always come out... no matter where you go...

Best advice is too just let the bad ones fight amongst themselves (ie - ignore)... and enjoy the conversations with the folks you get along with...
Posted by steve101 on 2007-10-04:
Cancel you AOL account and stop wasting your time in those chat rooms.
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-04:
Sparticus--I like your advice. I think when some people can remain anonymous behind their computer screen, they say things they would never say to someone's face. In life, they are probably just miserable in one way or another. I also choose to stay out of conversations that get out-of-hand or are ugly. Life's too short and I'm not that confrontational. Welcome, Ann Frank--there are a lot of good people on this site. But, be aware, there is also humor that pops up--and that I like.
Posted by shawnp80 on 2007-10-04:
Ann, You're nuttier than squirrel crap.
Posted by Stew.old on 2007-10-04:
dianec - I started posting online back in the day when it was all local BBS's. The first chat rooms were multi-line dial in local BBS's. I learned something very valuable... What people are trying to express and what is interpreted can be worlds apart. Since the boards were local of course that meant parties and socials where you got to meet in the REAL world. Some of the people I thought were the most caustic turned out to be really nice people who didn't realize how their humor and sarcasm came across sans the visual signals present in face to face conversation. I don't think there is a single regular contributor on my3cents who is actually a "creep" in the real world other than slimjimjohnson2000 - LOL.
Posted by MRM on 2007-10-04:
Hey Stew, its good to see that you're still around.
Posted by Leela on 2007-10-04:
Stew - some of the people I met back in those days, I wish I hadn't!
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-04:
Stew--Thanks for your input. I agree that many times the written word can come off much harsher than intended. That's why some people should perhaps re-read their posts before they hit "post my comment". Many times I have re-read mine and then I just didn't send them. No one wants to be perceived as an a$$. At least I don't--in the "real" world or on-line. (Although I am sure we have all come off as that at one point or another!) I do agree that most of the contributors on this site are probably pretty nice people. Some do seem to be mean though with nearly every comment they make. Life is just too short for that. I have often thought they may make good stand-up comedians though!
Posted by Lidman on 2007-10-04:
Dianec, Sparticus, good ideas, thoughts and I agree. I am one of those people who will can't or will not sit one the fence unless one runs into one of these stupid people that are just looking to start a fight, then who cares.

Welcome Ann Frank and I totally understand what you are saying about that kind of site. I've visited a few and they are just way out of control so I say away from them. Conspiracy used to mean a person is nuts but not anymore because there are so many from the Government on down its not even funny.

Well hope you stick around awhile I think you will find out we have our "crazies" too but it's mostly all in fun.
Posted by Lidman on 2007-10-04:
Stew, you did great up to a point which messed up your whole comment and I think you should say you are sorry for that slip because that's not nice or true either.

"I don't think there is a single regular contributor on my3cents who is actually a "creep" in the real world other than slimjimjohnson2000 - LOL."
Posted by Stew.old on 2007-10-04:
Lidman --- This is the best I can do.... If there was a button that if pushed would erase slimjim's existence on planet earth I probably wouldn't push that button.

Ann Frank - If I wanted to I could take great offense to your handle but I choose not to.

dianec -- The great thing about words is that they are so uniquely personal to each reader. What you read as 'mean' I read as funny. I think life is too short to get offended or upset by the written word unless of course it's something penned by slimjimjohnson2000.
Posted by DigitalCommando on 2007-10-04:
I have found that the most ardent "anti-prejudice" supporters, reveal their true inner prejudice at the first negative interaction with the very people they try so hard to "protect" and become themselves what they pretended not to be. Prejudice lies within all of us. We can strive to keep it's ugly head from arising and dominating our lives and making us evil. But rallying against it with a consuming, excessive zeal, may indicate a false battle within to keep down that prejudice (and guilt).
Posted by Lidman on 2007-10-04:
OK Stew, lets get it out in the open while we have a caring group here. Why do you hate Slim so much? Isn't it because of PWP? You know deep down you really like Slim and he has tried to be nice to you many times, so let it out, share with the group.

We are here to help you Stewart, we are your friends…….
Posted by Slimjim on 2007-10-04:
What's going on stew? How come your mind always seems so pre-occupied with me? I wish I could say you have the same impact on me to make you feel good, but alas, you and your different handles playing around on this site capture very little of my interest.
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-04:
Stew--again, good point. I don't get upset--I just ignore the comments I don't like. Some things are really funny--some just sound ignorant to me. But, again, back to freedom of speech! It's always the same though--what sounds funny to you or me (or anyone on this site) may not sound funny to the person who has had an incredibly bad day and is trying to voice their frustration by posting on this site.
That is when I feel some comments are just cruel. People don't need to be beat down anymore than they already are in life. Thanks DC for your (deep) thoughts.
Posted by Stew.old on 2007-10-04:
slim - That is not true at all. As an experiment I purposely ignored you for a few months. You still taunted me but I never responded until you started posting things about me ignoring you and I could tell by the tone and tenor of your words that it hurt your feelings. I figured what's the harm in continuing our little S&M online frolics if it could lessen the pain load of a fellow human being on this planet who I wouldn't zap out of existence if had the opportunity. I do think though you should learn to seek positive attention instead of always seeking negative. I'm no miracle worker... so I'll continue to feed your personality disorder till such time you receive proper help.
Posted by Slimjim on 2007-10-04:
LMAO, tell you what stew, I'll just go by the facts as we see evident on this thread as oppose to your recollection of how things went down. You do me (et al) no favors by posting on this site, but if having myself box your ears on occasion keeps you going in life, then who am I to disappoint.
Posted by UrFriendlyPirate on 2007-10-04:
Slim, you're a maroon. I'd like to buy you for what you're worth, and sell you for what you think you're worth - especially to this website a/c or no a/c.

Those AOL chat rooms have no sense of humor...I got hate messages (yes...the Basher)...only because I created a name and went into a Christian room and introduced myself as a Nun from a local church who practiced Paganism on the side...geeesh...I didn't see anything wrong with that...I even gave them the name of the local church...I always wondered if they got any "mail".
Posted by Slimjim on 2007-10-04:
Pirate, you and your whole trailer park neighbors couldn't pool enough in a lifetime to buy what I'm worth. Keep trolling on these reviews though. As clear as the admins have made what they think YOU are worth here, you apparently feel the need to test your stock's capablility of going even lower.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2007-10-04:
...but then again, I have to admit I got alot of Love messages from a bunch of guys...because I created a name and entered a gay chatroom and introduced myself as a large black gay man...boy did I have a tough time convincing them later that I really wasn't...one even emailing me stating, "You know too much about the pleasures of a man to NOT be one yourself"...he was in love with me for months!

Ann Frank: You posted this complaint. By doing so, you requested the membership to make comments and give opinions/advice. I would suggest that you not make 'psychotic' sounding statements. You also wrote,
"...What is becoming of America, freedom of speech, and privacy?".
It is my opinion, my freedom of speech, that your "conspiracy" theory is psychotic and in my opinion, you need professional help.
Good luck.

Posted by Ponie on 2007-10-04:
Ann, maybe the reason you're having trouble in the chat rooms is the attitude you displayed toward FUAP. The first comment, benign. But the next two were good attempts to chop him/her off at the knees. Didn't you notice his <;O) at the end? Many of the comments/posts on this board have to be taken with a grain of salt. And when the soup gets too salty, cook a potato in it to remove it.

As Ponie says, many of the comments/posts on this site have to be taken with a grain of salt. But how would someone new to this site know what to expect when they think this is a place to post a complaint? I think that if someone answered my post with, "I need a mental examination," or "I'm nuttier than squirrel crap," or any of the other insults, I would be offended and probably respond worse than AnnF did. I think most of the people here would also. No one knows that someone is joking and if they are serious--who are they to judge someone else or their experience? I can't accept the fact that people think it's okay to continually beat people down and then just move on to the next subject. I know--I've heard it; i.e.; It's all in good fun; Everybody here is really nice; I need to toughen up. I shouldn't take everything so seriously, etc., etc. I'm done. Peace out.

A chat site is a chat site is a chat site and people will be people... just like but holes; we all have one. Some people think they are superior, some people know they are not, and some people get mad about it....Maybe this comment will get posted. One addressed to FUAP did not and I don't think it was so bad. CONSPIRACY
Posted by Ann Frank on 2007-10-05:
Who decides what should be posted or should not be posted?
Is that person a people and thus subject to prejudices and biases? Debate is not one-sided.

Dianec has had, I know, 2 posts that were deleted. Why?

Thanks Dianec for your support. You are, in my judgement, a true human being. I'd give you another star if your comments were not deleted.

You control freaks should be deleted and the world would become a better place. Hello!!!

Because you stick together to do harm or try to damage an ego, does not make you superior. I know who I am. Do you?
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-05:
Ann--thanks. BTW, none of my comments were deleted.
Posted by DigitalCommando on 2007-10-05:
Ann, there are some people who come to this site, that post false claims solely for the purpose of getting a response from lot's of people. They do it for kick's. There is no way you could have known about this beforehand. Some people here will respond negatively if they rightly or wrongly interpret the post that way. It may not be right, it's just their way of fighting back. I do not think you have a mental problem at all, I'm sure what you are experiencing has really happened to you and my post was NOT meant to imply that YOU were mentally ill, perhaps an improperly placed attempt at comedy. As for the name callers here, they are a part of almost every site you go to. Why admin allows these people to continue with that is beyond me. I dont think they understand the concept that if site "hits" = advertising dollars (more site hits = higher advertising rates = more dollars in their bank) Is offset by the people who cause others to never return again, means less hits, less dollars and a tarnished reputation. Hang in their Ann, say what you want to say, be proud, and don't worry about a few negative comments.
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-05:
Thanks, DC--Well said.
Posted by Too Good To Be True on 2007-10-05:
Ann Frank or is it ?: Thanks for the e-mail. You have confirmed that you are mental. I have forwarded your e-mail to AOL for their review and i hope they cancel your AOL e-mail account. You are the one with the problem. You need help. I don't know why anyone would defend you - those people need to wake up.
Good luck.
<;O)
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-05:
FedUp--These people--meaning me and DC. Well, I will defend anyone who I feel is being ambushed and I'm not afraid or ashamed to say it. When someone makes derogatory remarks, they have to want or expect a negative response. There are very few people that will back down and go away without a fight. I am forever the optimist and know that most people haven't thought it out when putting something in writing, something more people should do. They just hit send. Sending hateful messages has just become too easy. Someone once said, "If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem." So true.
Posted by Too Good To Be True on 2007-10-05:
dianec: I enjoy all of your comments, well written, full of details, and are informative. Now, I am asking you to comment on the following. Let's say there is one person who has used 3 different nicknames but has the same AOL personal e-mail address. Let's say this persons posted 2 CVS complaints, one AOL, and possibly more. Let's say the content seemed 'odd'. Let's say this person sends very 'odd' and harassing e-mails.
What would be your opinion about those posts and the mental status of that person ?
<;O)
Posted by dianec on 2007-10-05:
Thank you FedUp. I don't give out my e-mail for that very reason you mentioned--I don't know anyone here personally--it would be like giving out my telephone address or phone number and I don't do that either. I do agree that some posts are a little far fetched, but we're going to get that once in a while. I am not gullible enough to think that all posts are valid or merit us taking them seriously--and some do deserve a little dig. I don't research the OP's as I don't care that much about their "other lives". But, I understand your point--that you do know a little something more about this person--and I respect that. I also understand that some people just like posting to get a reaction--good or bad. That's how they get their kicks out of life--unfortunately. I try not to feed into it, although sometimes they just make it too easy. I appreciate your comments too.

To Good To be True-

Why did you change your handle from FAUP?
Posted by Smiles777 on 2010-12-24:
I know I am very late to this conversation, but let me make an observation: Ann Frank, you are absolutely right in your perceptions about loss of privacy and freedom of speech despite the ignorance of "Too Good to Be True." I have never known AOL to ban people from posting unless you have been banned from a room -- or kicked out, a dynamic which is made possible thanks to PowerTools.

I had to leave a chatroom tonight -- a dating chatroom, where adults come together to simply talk about politics, whatever. Often the conversations descends to stupidity, lowest common denominator, etc. Anyway, someone had broached a serious topic and I responded accordingly, respectfully and polite -- a response which elicited shrill attacks from the AOL chatters, attacking me for spoiling their fun. They made ad hominen attacks, cussed me out, etc., When I asked what elicited this reaction, they couldn't give one beyond primal screams -- ie., these people are reactive, uneducated, of low intelligence, etc. Can you imagine your neighbor asking, "What do you think of (name current event here)" and responding with a sensible answer -only to have them curse at you and want to kill you? I am not talking about different points of view, but merely expressing an opinion which is well articulated..and true. Many people on AOL hate the truth and love lies. They are also bitter, frustrated, unstable, toxic, and probably mentally ill.

I would put "Too Good to be True" in this category. He responds like a manipulator and one bent on degrading -- ie, by tormenting you and calling you mentally ill. If he really felt that you were a little off, what kind of a beast would he have to be to attack you in such a vicious way? The bottom line is that he's a nasty, insignificant bully. He's the kind of guy who gets power over others by degrading them and mocking them and harming their self esteem so he can feel better about himself. He operated at a very low level of mental and emotional functioning -- almost at the level of a toddler. A comparable example would be a bully kid going up to another exclaiming, "You're stupid" and continuing to say that until the other kid cries and then rejoicing at his superiority for having elicited pain and submission in the other.

In the real world of high functioning adults, no one would tolerate his sort of behavior. I can't imagine that he is successful at life, career, or love. What a nasty piece of work -- and may heaven help the people unlucky enough to share space with him.

As for your perceptions, Ann, despite "Too Good to be True's" desperate ignorance, our freedom of speech is being limited. (Example: the federal government is now regulating the Internet.) Our privay is being eroaded (Example: Patriot Act....)You are right and you need to continue to speak your mind and not allow yourself to be intimidated or cowed by ignoramuses like Too Good to Be True who probably sits around all day eating, drinking, watching football/porn, and scratching where the sun doesn't shine. Notice how the nasty people/trolls don't respond with reason -- they just made ad hominen attacks -- ie, "you're stupid." etc. It's ends the dialog and conversation. Where do you go from there? Why would you want to -- as they have just communicated that they don't have the maturity or presence of mind for intelligent conversation and would rather be distracting themselves instead of dealing with life in a sensible fashion. Have pity. And it's best not to respond or feed the trolls. The worst thing you can do to idiots like "Too Good to Be True" is ignore them. You know he's an idiot. However, he has no clue that he is. Have pity, and know that you are ten steps ahead of him.
