Direct Merchants Bank Complaint - harrassing customer service

Review by genie3311 on 2003-05-30
I have a Direct Merchants Credit Card. I have been unemployed for almost a year, and until this month never missed a payment. I wrote a letter to Direct Merchants Bank complaining about late and over the limit charges assessed to my account which were done because my cash flow does not allow me to use my own bank online service, so I tried to unsuccessfully use theirs for two months. My payments prior to that had been done online through Bank One. A very pleasant accomodating person responded to the letter and told me to talk to the person who would call me after I missed this first payment and some type arrangements could be made to lower the interest rate and reduce the payment. The person who called about 8:30 p.m. today was rude, pushy and inconsiderate. He acted as though he knew nothing about this notation in my file, asked me if some family member could pay my bill, and asked if I could make arrangements. I told this man I was having problems with my blood pressure and that I considered this harrassing and was going to hang up before my blood pressure went up and he then started asking me if I was looking for a job. I told him I could not handle his insults and demeanment and that I could tell my blood pressure was going up (I have been under a doctor's care for it) and I hang up the phone as he continued to talk about the fact that I had contracted with them. I pay my bills and I told him I don't have any money and that when I did I would pay him, but I had to keep a roof over my head.

I think it is very inconsiderate, and lacking empathy when you tell someone about your blood pressure and they keep up the collection tactics.

I suppose he was within the parameters of a collection person, but he has given me chest pains. I want to document this just in case I have a stroke or heart attack. I think it was very inconsiderate of him to not even consider my mention of the very informative and considerate representative who had told me how to handle this situation since I am out of work.

I did not get this rude, high pressure collection person's name, unfortunately.
