Hilton Hotels Complaint - Racism
I have been a Hilton Honors member for quite a while now. I am a teacher living in Georgia and working on a master's degree in Florida. I have traveled quite a bit to Jacksonville for distance classes. I have usually chosen to reside at the Hilton Homewood Suites on Baymeadows Road. The hotel is set up with many buildings which are not connected to the main lobby. Therefore, going to and from the lobby may require driving depending on which building you are staying in. This morning I was taking my breakfast out of the lobby and about to drive back to the building where my suite is located. This man approaches me and questions me about if I am a guest there, when I say yes, he proceeds to ask me what room am I staying in. I asked him does he work there. He told me yes, did not identify himself as the General Manager. Instead he tells me that they have had people take food out of the lobby who aren't guests. In his opinion, I guess maybe I had stolen the 2007 BMW that I was getting into when he approached me because I am African American. I went to the front desk and cancelled my reservation for the next night.
He came out and tried to downplay the incident. I asked him what was it about me that would make you think I would steal food? Because I'm Black? He was not apologetic at all. Of course, I reported this to the corporate headquarters of Hilton.
Regardless of the action they do or don't take, at least I can inform others about what kind of establishment this is.
