Autowise Complaint - Beware AutoWise = Payless Car rental

Review by paul4 on 2007-10-26
MONTREAL -- First: Autowise = Payless. They have such a bad reputation that they have invented AutoWise website to fool customers! They are running the business with the mentality of a merchant in an old Indian bazaar! If you want to deal with absolute idiots and abusers, go to AutoWise car rental. I booked over the internet with the promise of unlimited miles and an upgrade. When I got to the rental agency in Montreal (Canada)after a long international trip:

1. They tried hard to sell me unnecessary insurance and I had to call my agent in the USA to have him fax my insurance details to Payless (I had my insurance card with me, but they did not accept it). Thanks to my agent (Michael Randolph of Allstate in Charlotte) who told me not to budge as I am insured already by Allstate. Payless threatened me to cancel my rental. I was lucky that this happened before 5 pm where I could talk to my agent, but I had to spend hard dollars to call the US from Canada.

2. They did not honor the price given to me on the internet reservation, despite a paper copy of their email and internet reservation.

3. They did not honor the unlimited miles promised on the internet reservation! The claimed that it can only be used in Quebec!

DO NOT USE PAYLESS MONTREAL EVER. THEY ARE RUNNING A SCAM. I wish I'd read the previous complaint before I left. I had a similar experience with the Montreal Payless people. They led me to believe I was declining insurance coverage (in which case you must pay $8.95 daily, which they referred to as basic coverage. I signed for this. When I returned two weeks later, my bill was $500 more than it was supposed to be! It turns out that the "basic coverage" (which they led me to believe was the $8.95 waiver) actually cost $25/day! Of course, I initialed and signed all the places that the rep highlighted and explained "initial here to say that you are waiving insurance". Needless to say, a dispute is underway. And they did the same thing as the previous 3cents post, claiming that mileage is unlimited only within Quebec. Final testament to how sketchy the place is: I paid partially in cash... and the guy put it in his pocket. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE CROOKS.

I had very the same experience and I could go into more detail here... but the webpage would probably overflow.
It is important to note that they use the same scam tactic all over the web, including Yahoo as well as www.carrental.com. The scam was the same as described here.

While I was ripped off by them I met someone in the office who went through a very similar experience.
Did you notice that they only have first names and not family names? Sounds fishy...
