Dahon Complaint - Shoddy Construction - Folding Bicycle

Review by PiperH on 2007-11-13
My uncle gave me a folding Dahon "Boardwalk" bike when I moved onto a sailboat. He had bought the bike on craigslist. It was like new. There was not a scratch on it. It looked unused. Four months later I was riding to the store when the bike collapsed beneath me, badly cutting the back of my ankle. It broke at the hinge it folds on. Fortunately I was not among car traffic when this happened, but I was two miles from the marina, limping with a bloody ankle. I emailed Dahon. they never responded.

The bike is dangerously weak at the folding hinge. I only weigh 115 pounds.

They warranty the bike for five years. But the warranty is only good to the original purchaser.

A folding bike? And you're surprised it collapsed?

You do not know if the previous owner had a problem or altered the bike, that may have been why they were getting rid of it, not the Dahon's fault

As a sailor I see many folding bikes, some thirty years old, most built much stronger. More stainless components would be a good idea since these are marketed to boaters. I have met two other people who have also had this happen. One woman, a mother, received brain damage. We should remember the time in this country when items were expected to last more than a year or two. We should not accept poor construction as the standard. We should reward companies that produce Quality goods with our patronage.
