Ford Motor Informative - Engine troubles - 2008 F250 Super Duty 4x4 6.4 Diesel

2008 F250 Super Duty 4x4 6.4 Diesel
Review by Zaltik on 2007-11-21
CLEARWATER, FLORIDA -- Thought I would post some info on my truck that I purchased new the end of March 2007, I now have approx. 17,000 miles on it. It has been in for service for a varity of issues and out of service for 45 days to date. I will list a few of the issues for some of you to review. Do not take me wrong I think this is a beautiful truck "BUT" ...

With less then 2,000 miles it ran very rough and needed 2 injectors replaced. Ford adviced that I will need to run a fuel additive as the Ultra low sulphur available at this time is not up to standards. I complied and with in another 2,000 miles lost another injector. Each time is about 5 days in the shop to complete. I continued to experience rough running when the engine would do its regeneration mode for the enviromentaly friendly clean air...hahah, Sorry to say it happens at least once per tank full of fuel, it will idle higher and miss.

If in park it will idle up to about 1300 RPM. I have been told this is normal and have excepted that, This is just somthing I wanted to put out there to perspective new owners as what to expect.
By 7500 miles it was leaking oil badly, back in for service and a long wait as they had to remove the cab from the truck to get at the engine (27 days out service) my dealer didn't have the equiptment and was tooling up for it. There fine mechanic was able to rig a system up to get body off w/o new lift equiptment.

While this was apart they replaced a wiring harness defect that was dealer notified problem as it lays in the wrong way and heat can effect it ( for those of you who may have electrical problems). I drove as a happy truck driver for 5000 miles and then before a trip a water leak, the radiator tank separated. With in a week I started hearing a whine noise, like a power steering pump low on fluid, I now believe it may be a bearing in the Turbo charger? I made appointment to take it back in and realized I was leaking engine oil again.

I am on hold as at this point I felt it nessasary to Lemon Law this vehicle. Good notes the truck has loads of power for towing and bed loads I have put 3200#lbs in bed with no drivability problems. Milage 12.8-13.3 in town and I am not easy on the pedal, at 65 mph expect 17.8-19.5 mpg (girlfriend gets the 19mpg+ w/o cruise control, not me haha)

Hope this helps a Ford truck owner or shed some light on possible issues with this new truck I have been Beta testing.............

That's not good news. I've been thinking about replacing my 7.3L Powerstroke and I have been waiting for this 6.4L engine to "get the bugs worked out" of it. The 6.0L they offered from 2003-2006 had so many problems that I decided to wait for the 2007's since this engine was supposed to be so much better - but having to have that much engine work done in 17K miles doesn't bode well for this engine either.

I own a 2005 expedition and I bought it new and at 20.000 miles I had three injectors go out coming back from my uncle funnera.my engine is a 5.4 gasoline motor. than at 40.000 miles I had another go out and I had to pay for that myself and I am glad We have friends that work on cards and know what they are doing and are cheap. when I first had problems with the injectors and they fixed them it just didn't idle right and the response to that from ford was it won't be just like it was when you bought it new so i went along with it . I was so discussed with ford I don't think I will buy another until I do my homework on them.

Just a update to my post. Had contact with another perspective buyer and he decided to keep his 7.3, he reported to me he had 2 customers who told him that they had to have there new 2008 6.4 engines replaced because of a cooling radiator that some how comtaminated water into the engine oil and toasted the engines, there is like 6-7 coolers on the front of this truck, He remarked the EGR ?, cooler, I am not sure which one it was but water into the oil was the end result and they needed new engines in 2 new 2008 ford trucks. I will follow up with a Lemon Law blog as it progress's on my Truck

Luke I sent a notice of defect to Ford and the States Attorneys office on Nov. 13. I also went to the BBB/Auotline (Better Business Bu). I would recomend filling there form out and also check with you states attorneys office as to the States guidlines. In FL we have to notify the Manufacture, and the State, this gives Ford 10 days to schedule a final repair or inspection. I am at 9 days now, and no notification from Ford The local BBB rep contacted me yesterday and said she had arrainged with Ford for me to take to my local dealer, upon arrival I was told they can't do anything for me. They and myself need to get proper documentation from Ford and has to be brought in with a Divisional field rep from Ford, was told he won't be in the area for another 3 weeks. I contacted the states help line and was informed; If Ford does not contact me by tommorrow eve. I can go back to BBB and request Arbitration and BBB has 30 days for them to arrainge that. This was told to me by the States Attorneys office today on the Phone. So I can see this will be a slow horse race. I didnt want to get involved with an attorney, as not sure who pays that cost and if it could delay the process using a thrid party, I have a tendency to dig into matters, get info and be a real bulldog in situations like this, it is a $50,000 truck and it is now become personal to me. Side note, I have gotten the cold and rude shoulder from Fords Customer care service center and was in disbelief as to how I was treated, thinking I might be a valued customer (4 Ford work trucks and vans over the last 15 years) and this new beast. Very wrong but me being personal I suppose.
My 1st oil leak was from the injector pump and a gear box on back of the engine I was told and was out service 27 days that time. It is leaking oil again. Along with a whine/growl like a bad bearing or powwer steering pump sound best I can tell. More to follow

Zaltik.. Thanks for the information, it is very helpful. I am sorry to say that I think I will be going down your same road as well. And yes, I like you, take it personal.. I have purchased 5 of these new trucks over the past 10 years and I am shocked as to the service.. this truck is $50,000 and when my wife walks into the Lexus dealer with her $30,000 car she comes home as if having been to the spa.. I guess I am missing something here.. Thanks to keep me posted to your developments..

Wish I would have been able to read this posting before Labor Day of 2007. We purchased a 2008 F250 Super Duty 4x4 diesel and loved it. The sales person told us about the motors regeneration process which is detailed in your posting, but all they told us was that it would regen every so often and thought it was about 1,000 miles. My husband only drives 8 miles back and forth to work, but does drive and haul a lot in the winter months to the deer lease and that's why he wanted the diesel. He began noticing the RPMs would go up when he placed the truck in park and make a loud noise. The truck did this several weeks. He took it into the Dealership and was told it was normal. After the third time and beginning to only get 8 miles to a gallon he took it in again and asked to speak to the diesel mechanic. He was a little irate since the truck only had 12,000 miles on it and the mechanic finally showed him some paperwork that stated the truck would go into regen every 100 to 600 miles and if you did not let the regen complete it would stay that way, thus causing the low fuel mileage. My husband was told to drive an additional 30 to 50 miles to let the regen complete or let it run in our driveway for 45 minutes each time. Needless to say my husband went to see the Sales Manager and asked why the salesperson did not explain this and found out NO ONE other than the mechanic knew this. My husband also check with a Chevy diesel mechanic and was told their diesels would do the same thing. Well long story short my husband told the Sales Manager that since they sold us a truck without giving us all the necessary information and one that did not suit our needs they needed to do whatever it took to get us into a gas truck. Several calls were made within the dealership and we now own a new 2008 F150 four door 4x4 that has a lot more perks than our other, but was given to us at a major discount. BUYER BEWARE!!!

i purchased a 2008 f550 with the 6.4 powerjoke. I don't advise anyone to buy this poorly built engine. I have had nothing but grief with it. It started at 3000 miles when the water pump snapped off and sent the fan through the radiator. Next the heater core went at 5000 miles it took 3 days to change. Then i had another rad at 10000 miles. Had engine derate for egr sensors failing. Now at 20000 miles i have excessive metal particales in oil filter. Sent truck to dealership for repair. Dealership contacted Ford adviser and said it was normal to have steel particals in filter and they are not going to address the problem till the engine fails. I have checked into avalibillity of a new 6.4l it take up to 6 weeks to recieve. THANKS FORD
