Best Buy Complaint - Racist Store Manager
ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA -- I bought a Sony receiver a week ago and saw a new advertised price today. I brought my receipt back to the store and thought they would just give me the price difference. Instead, Ryan, who turned out to be the general manager, told me that they could not do that. I told him that it would be the same if I just return the item. He said that there would be a restocking fee of 15% and that I should reconsider it. When I read the sales receipt, it read "A restocking fee of 15% will be charged on opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPA/navigational and in-car video system..."
There was nothing on the receiver. I called back to the store and asked for the manager. The operator transfer me to Lindsey, supposedly a store manager. After I had explained to her the situation, she told me that there was a misunderstanding and that I could just come in to get the price difference. I asked whether I would need to bring back the receiver. She reassured me that I did not have to. When I drove all the way to the store (5 miles away), Ryan, the store manager who did not even know about the store return policy told me that he would not give me the price difference. I told him that I had just driven back from my home after speaking to Lindsey, the other manager.
He said he was standing there with Lindsey and that Lindsey was below him so he would not make the change. I asked him to read his own store policy on return. Afterward, he tried to make an excuse that he thought it was after 30 days. I said I had told him that I bought it last week, and showed the receipt with November 16, 2007 date. He had no respond.
He became extremely rude and told me that he did not have time to discuss with me.
I have a serious concern here. The store managers did not know their own policy. Perhaps it is not surprise that none of the managers know the store policy because the general manager was too ignorant and illiterate himself. Regardless, they should not have given me different information and make me drive back and forth twice.
I feel that the general manager, Ryan, was trying to discourage me from returning because he thought I could not read the store policy since I was an Asian with an accent. I feel that he had made a very racist prejudgement. If he was standing next to Lindsey when I was speaking to her, why didn't he just tell her that I could not get the price difference? Why wouldn't a store manager know his own return policy?
It all seems that he took me as just an undeducated Asian person and made a racist prejudgement.
