Truman Medical Center Complaint - Never Seek Care At TMC Lakewood

Review by Nurse Kathy on 2007-11-26
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- Last week my 22 year old son was injured and was taken to the closest hospital. Although we have health insurance he was taken to Truman Medical Center Lakewood.

I have been a nurse for over 20 years, and still was surprised at what I saw. My son waited in the ER for over 6 hours for a bed on the medical surgical unit, when he final was assisted by a hospital chaplin to contact his father and me, he then told us about his accident. We rushed to the hospital in Lee Summit, only to find him in pain. In the ER he wet himself because the nursing and medical staff could not assist him when he needed to go to the bathroom. He had blood soaked pants and a tee-shirt which was dried on this young man. No one even attempted to clean him up, or offer him any fluids. His IV line had come out and saturated the sheets, blanket, and puddled on the floor. No one noticed. He was in pain, but the nursing staff "did not know if we could give him anything for pain." He had been there for over 4 hours, without any pain medication. When we asked the physician we were told, " I ordered pain medication for him when he was admitted, the nurse must have forgotten to give it to him."

I called the nursing supervisor, who said "If it was my son, I would transfer him out, quickly, since he has insurance". The supervisor suggested a hospital up the road. She called them, and he was taken to Saint Lukes. After that experience, all went well. Our son had broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken ankle. All were treated that night at Saint Lukes. He is now home. I would suggest no one ever go to TMC Lakewood.

If he was in an accident why didn't they have him in a bed and triaged? Was he taken by ambulance or was he dropped off by a friend? Have you spoken to the ombudsman yet? If I were you I would find a patient advocate now and immediately report this. Especially because he was getting no fluids. It seems like not one person even bothered to check on him and just left him to sit to the side and fend for himself.
