Dean Foods Compliment - Where is the IMO? - IMO Sour Cream Substitute

IMO Sour Cream Substitute - Compliment
Review by Starlord on 2007-12-14
COOLIDGE, ARIZONA -- I used a sour cream substitute for many, many years. The last manufacturer was Dean Foods, the maker of a lot of dips for chips or veggies.

IMO (I-M-O, not I-Mo) tasted much better than so-called real sour cream, it cost about the same, if not a few cents cheaper than sour cream, did not separate, had a much longer shelf life, and mixed with soup mixes to make dips much more smoothly. In my opinion, if they had IMO on the shelf, as far as I was concerned they could trash the sour cream. The only place I could find IMO was the local Safeway store until it suddenly disappeared from the shelves. Safeway has a form you can fill out requesting a product or making a comment or complaint about Safeway. I filled out one of these forms for IMO, and when someone from Safeway called me, she was very short with me, like what business did I have questioning Safeway. First she tried telling me that IMO was no longer manufactured, then later in the call, let it slipped that Safeway had discontinued it.

I found out that it was still being made, and I have been asking all the local grocery stores to order it for me, so far without results. Safeway personnel still act like they despise me for having the audacity to inquire about IMO. I want IMO, not lies and excuses!

The funny thing about sour cream, how do you tell when it's gone bad?
Posted by WaxRash on 2007-12-14:
good question Pirate.I dont eat the stuff, but my wife loves it on tacos.

Bad sour cream smells like yogurt.

I'm sorry you can't find this product. I'm not a fan of sour cream myself, unless it's in veggie dip, so I can't tell you if they sell this product by me. I will say that it's terrible that they can't at least order it for you.

Call the corporate office and see what you can find out.

I hate when I can't find a product anymore. Several years ago Land o' Lakes had macaroni and cheese, it was much better than Kraft, and Big Y was the only place that carried it. Then they stopped carrying it, and I can't find it anywhere. It makes me so sad.

ejack, cheese happens, according to the Food Network 'Unwrapped' series.

Sara...Land o' Lakes has the best American cheese you buy at the deli counter too.

DB my kids love the Land o Lakes yellow american.

Sarah, I found the mac and cheese in jersey. My sister sends me some once a month because it's the only boxed mac and cheese my kids will eat.

Valveeta has a good Mac and Cheese...I think I remember seeing the Land O' Lakes, but not sure if I've seen it lately, now that you mention it...I'll have to check it out. The Mac and cheese with white cheese is really good.

I think Kraft makes a shells and white cheddar. Kraft Deluxe I believe. It's great for a quick lunch. Mac and cheese and some broccoli or tomatoes. And if I have left over meat from dinner the night before throw that in too.

Starlord, IM(H)O, IMO sounds like something I'd like. Never heard of it. Living alone, by the time I get to about half a container of sour cream, it's yucky and all separated. Is it in the dairy section or on the grocery shelf? I'm going to keep a lookout for it.

PWP, you can tell when it goes bad if after opening the refrigerator door you gag. :)

Ponie, it should be right next to the regular sour cream...it whips up real nice with a fork for dips and stuff...hubby loves the stuff but no one here carries it anymore. Any store that carries other DEAN products should have it.

Raley's has IMO. You also might try looking at Safeway still, but in the organic / whole foods dairy case. It might be next to the vegan cheese. At Raley's the IMO is with the whole foods by the fresh goat milk, LOL, and they also stock it in the regular dairy case next to the regular sour cream. That Safeway employee needs to be reported to Safeway corporate in an email or letter by post. That was inappropriate and juvenile, and downright controlling. It's your body, your kitchen, and you have a right to request they carry whatever foods or ingredients you want. We have the right to vote, too, and we damn well have the right to shop somewhere else. Throw another idea at you, try Trader Joe's grocery, too. They carry alot of organic / whole foods / healthier, tastier alternatives(that's all they carry).

An hour away is Whole Foods Market. Why not give them a call. If they have IMO, take a cooler, put in some ice, and go get your fill to bring back home! 5120 S Rural Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282, (480) 456-1400, wholefoodsmarket.com

Good news, gang!! The Safeway store in Lacey has IMO again!! I asked one of the clerks about it, and he said, "someone raised a fuss, so they decided to bring it back." That is the answer, if you want IMO at your store, have your friends all contact the store again and again, demanding they carry IMO. Tip: concentrate on the idea of lactose intolerance. IMO can be used by people who cannot use sour cream, so work on that. Good luck. M3C scores a victory.

We have just moved to Chehalis, WA, and went to Safeway yesterday. The Safeway store here carries IMO and it is displayed in a conspicuous place. Kudos to Safeway Chehalis!

I had the same situation with Safeway no longer carrying the IMO brand. However, Albertson is carrying the IMO. This is as of December 20, 2010. Hope this helps.

I'm gonna try to check out the Safeway store here in Portland! I miss my IMO!! And good to know that if you request it enough, they bring it back! :)

Good news for those of us on the San Francisco Peninsula. Dehoff's Key Market in Redwood City has responded to my request to resume carrying IMO. Non-fermented soy mimics estrogen and may increase your risk of getting breast cancer. (Men get breast cancer, too.) Safeway rejected my request. I even looked in Southern California. Evidently, IMO doesn't sell well because everyone wants "natural" now. But I'll take a few chemicals any day, over increasing my risk of getting breast cancer.
